The 8mm to 24mm Variable Focal Length System

This eyepiece's primary function is its ability to adjust magnification on the fly. Start at the 24mm setting for the widest possible view to locate and center your target. Then, with a simple twist of the rubberized barrel, you can zoom in to 8mm for high-power views, observing fine detail on planets or splitting tight double stars without interruption.

This seamless transition is invaluable for outreach or for nights of variable seeing conditions, as it lets you instantly match the magnification to what the atmosphere will support. The aluminum body features standard 1.25" filter threads, allowing you to add a Moon or nebula filter that remains in place across the entire zoom range.

A 40-60° Field for Planets, the Moon, and More

The apparent field of view changes dynamically as you zoom, starting at a functional 40° at the 24mm setting and widening to an immersive 60° at the 8mm setting. The 40° field is ample for locating objects and observing large targets like the Orion Nebula (M42) or the full lunar disc, while the 60° field at high power provides enough space to comfortably track planets as they drift across the sky.

While a zoom eyepiece trades the ultra-wide fields of fixed focal length eyepieces for convenience, the 40-60° range is well-suited for a majority of astronomical and terrestrial targets. The short 6mm of eye relief is a notable trade-off, making it less ideal for observers who require eyeglasses.
