The move to f/7 increases the photographic speed of the telescope, but Sky-Watcher has ensured that optical integrity remains paramount. The EDX 100 is significantly faster (f/7 vs f/9), which means it has a shorter focal length (700mm vs 900mm). This provides a wider field of view and requires shorter exposures for photography. Mechanically, the EDX is superior with a 2.8" focuser, a retractable dew shield, and an integrated rotator—features the older f/9 model lacked.
While faster doublets are generally harder to correct, the use of FPL-53 glass and modern lens figuring allows the EDX 100 to maintain excellent apochromatic performance. For visual use and most imaging scenarios, the chromatic aberration remains negligible.
For small-sensor cameras (like 1/1.8" or 1" formats), you may not notice significant field curvature. However, for Micro Four Thirds, APS-C, or Full-Frame sensors, we highly recommend the dedicated 0.92x Reducer/Flattener to ensure sharp stars across the entire frame.
