Cases and Covers

Most equipment damage in astronomy happens in transit and in storage, not on the sky. A telescope that survives a season of tailgate transport without a case will eventually lose collimation or gain a scratch, and a tube left uncovered outdoors collects moisture that takes far longer to clear than it took to form. Do I need a hard case or is soft enough?
Soft is adequate for careful car transport over short distances. Hard cases are worth it if equipment travels frequently, flies, or shares space with anything that can shift.
Can I leave my telescope outside under a cover?
For a permanently mounted setup, yes, with a proper weatherproof cover and desiccant inside the tube's dust cap. Expect to check for condensation regularly, especially through spring and autumn temperature swings.
How do I stop fungus on my optics?
Store in a dry, ventilated place rather than sealed with trapped humidity, and use rechargeable desiccant in cases. Fungus grows on coatings in warm, damp, still air, which is exactly what a sealed case in a basement provides.
