Spare Parts

Equipment rarely fails all at once. A thumbscrew strips, a tension spring loses its set, a plastic gear cracks in the cold, a knob goes missing in the grass — and a working telescope becomes a project. David Astro carries spare parts in Canada and can source many more through dealer channels, in stock and shipped from our Canadian warehouse.

The Parts That Fail First

Failures cluster around a small number of components, most of them inexpensive and most of them disabling.

  • Thumbscrews and set screws: Stripped, lost or seized fasteners on focusers, rings and saddles — the single most common small failure.
  • Tension springs and clutches: Focuser tension springs and mount clutch components that lose grip over time and cause slipping.
  • Gears and worm components: Drive parts, particularly plastic gears in lower-cost mounts, which become brittle after repeated cold cycling.
  • Hand controllers and cables: Coiled cables that fail internally after flexing, and connectors that corrode at the mount end.
  • Knobs and locking levers: Altitude and azimuth adjusters, focus knobs and locking levers that shear or strip.
  • Felt, liners and seals: Ring liners and light-baffle felt that compress or peel over time and are easy to replace.

Can you get parts for a discontinued telescope?
Often yes. Many manufacturers maintain service stock well beyond a product's sales life and supply it to dealers. Tell us the model and the part and we will check.
I do not know the part number. Can you still help?
Yes. Send us a photograph and the equipment model and we will identify it. Part numbers for fasteners and small components are rarely documented for customers anyway.
Why do plastic parts fail in winter?
Polymers become brittle at low temperatures, and a gear or knob that flexes fine at room temperature can crack at minus 25 under normal force. Metal replacements exist for some common failures.
What if the part is not available?
We can often repair the assembly in-house or fabricate a functional replacement, which is usually faster and cheaper than replacing the whole component.
