  • Celestron AstroMaster 70AZ Telescope

The Celestron AstroMaster 70AZ Telescope combines a 70mm refractor optical tube with a long 900mm focal length for high-contrast views of the solar system. This f/13 system gathers 100x more light than the human eye, resolving details down to 1.66 arc seconds with a limiting stellar magnitude of 11.7. The full kit weighs just 10.8 lbs, making it a portable and straightforward gateway to nighttime observing.

70mm Refractor Optics for Lunar and Planetary Viewing

The core of the AstroMaster 70AZ is its 70mm achromatic refractor. The long f/13 focal ratio minimizes chromatic aberration (false color), producing sharper, higher-contrast images of bright objects like the Moon, Jupiter, and Saturn. This design is ideal for learning the fundamentals of planetary observation without the complexities of collimation required by reflector telescopes.

    • High-Power Views: The 900mm focal length makes it easy to achieve high magnification. The included 10mm eyepiece provides 90x, perfect for seeing Jupiter's cloud bands or the rings of Saturn on a steady night.
    • Fully Coated Optics: All air-to-glass surfaces are coated to increase light transmission and contrast, ensuring the brightest possible images from the 70mm aperture.
    • Resolving Power: With a Dawes limit of 1.66 arc seconds, this telescope can split close double stars and reveal fine detail in lunar craters that are invisible to the naked eye.

Manual Alt-Azimuth Mount with 51" Adjustable Tripod

Setting up the AstroMaster 70AZ is simple thanks to the pre-assembled tripod and manual alt-azimuth mount. The intuitive pan-handle control allows you to smoothly move the telescope up, down, left, and right to track celestial objects as they drift across the sky. The entire mount and tripod assembly weighs only 7.9 lbs, making it easy to carry to your favorite dark-sky location.

    • No-Tool Setup: The optical tube attaches securely to the mount via a standard CG-5 dovetail bar, allowing you to go from packed up to observing in minutes.
    • Adjustable Height: The steel tripod legs have a height adjustment range from 32" to 51", providing comfortable viewing angles for observers of all sizes, whether seated or standing.
    • Accessory Tray: A built-in tray keeps your eyepieces and accessories organized and within reach during observing sessions.

A Complete Kit with 2 Eyepieces and Starry Night Software

This telescope package includes everything you need for your first night out. You get two eyepieces: a 20mm for wide-field views at 45x magnification and a 10mm for higher-power views at 90x. The included erect image diagonal ensures that your views are correctly oriented, making the telescope equally useful for terrestrial daytime viewing of landscapes and wildlife.

    • StarPointer™ Finderscope: The red dot finder projects a simple red dot onto a non-magnified window, allowing you to easily aim the main telescope at your target.
    • Erect Image Diagonal: Unlike standard diagonals that produce a mirror-reversed or upside-down image, this 1.25" diagonal provides a correctly oriented view, which is essential for terrestrial observation.
    • Starry Night Software: Your purchase includes a free download of Celestron's Starry Night Basic Edition, a powerful planetarium software that helps you learn the constellations and plan your future observing sessions.
  • What can I see with the Celestron AstroMaster 70AZ Telescope?

The AstroMaster 70AZ is excellent for bright solar system objects. You can expect to see detailed craters and mountains on the Moon, the four Galilean moons of Jupiter, the rings of Saturn, and the phases of Venus. Brighter deep-sky objects like the Orion Nebula (M42) and the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) will be visible as faint smudges from a dark location.

Is the AstroMaster 70AZ good for kids?

Yes, its no-tool setup and simple point-and-look manual mount make it very user-friendly for beginners and children, with adult supervision. The total kit weighs only 10.8 lbs, making it easy to transport and set up. The erect image diagonal also allows for intuitive daytime use.

How do I find objects in the sky with the AstroMaster 70AZ?

You use the included StarPointer™ red dot finderscope. After a simple alignment process, you look through the finder and move the telescope until the red dot is on your target. Then, when you look in the eyepiece, the object will be in your field of view. The included Starry Night software will help you learn where to point the telescope.

Can I use the AstroMaster 70AZ for astrophotography?

The AstroMaster 70AZ is designed for visual observation. While you can hold a smartphone up to the eyepiece to take basic photos of the Moon, the manual alt-azimuth mount does not track the stars, making it unsuitable for long-exposure astrophotography of faint deep-sky objects.

What is the difference between the 20mm and 10mm eyepieces?

The two eyepieces provide different magnifications. The 20mm eyepiece gives a lower magnification of 45x, which provides a wider field of view for finding objects and observing large star clusters. The 10mm eyepiece provides a higher magnification of 90x, which is better for viewing details on planets and the Moon.

Can I use the AstroMaster 70AZ to look at the Sun?

Never look at the Sun through a telescope without a certified, full-aperture solar filter that covers the front of the telescope. Looking at the sun without the proper filter will cause permanent and irreversible eye damage. This telescope does not include a solar filter.
