Polar Scopes
Polar alignment determines how long you can expose before field rotation and drift show, and it is the step that most often gets rushed. A polar scope with an illuminated reticle turns a guessing exercise into a two-minute procedure with a repeatable result. David Astro carries polar scopes in Canada, stocked in Canada and shipped worldwide.
Fitment is mount-specific and reticle patterns differ. Tell us your mount and we will confirm the correct scope and explain how to use its pattern.

Polar Alignment Methods and Accuracy
Polaris is not at the celestial pole. Every polar scope reticle is a way of placing it correctly relative to the pole for your date and time.
- Reticle patterns: Circles, clock faces or date scales that indicate where Polaris should sit. Patterns differ by manufacturer and need the correct procedure for that design.
- Illuminated reticles: Adjustable red illumination, which must be dim enough not to overwhelm Polaris itself — a common frustration with fixed-brightness units.
- Achievable accuracy: A well-used polar scope reaches a few arcminutes, which is entirely adequate for guided imaging at most focal lengths.
- Electronic alternatives: Camera-based polar alignment reaches better accuracy in less time and works when Polaris is obscured by a building or tree.
- Drift alignment: The most accurate method, requiring no view of the pole at all, at the cost of considerably more time.
- Mount-specific fitment: Polar scopes are matched to a mount's polar axis bore, and the reticle must match the mount's documented procedure.
Why Choose David Astro for Polar Scopes
The right alignment method depends on your site more than on your equipment.
- Site-based advice: If Polaris is blocked from your usual spot, we will point you to an electronic solution rather than sell a polar scope you cannot use.
- Procedure explained: Reticle patterns are not self-explanatory, and we will walk through the correct procedure for your specific mount and reticle.
- Accuracy expectations set: We tell you what accuracy is actually needed for your focal length, so you do not spend an hour chasing precision that guiding would handle.
- Authorized dealer: Genuine products with manufacturer warranty, in Canadian stock.
- Ships from Canada: No duties or brokerage fees for Canadian orders.
Polar Scopes in Canada — Frequently Asked Questions
- How accurate does polar alignment need to be?
- For guided imaging, a few arcminutes is sufficient — guiding handles the residual drift. For unguided or very long focal length work, aim for under one arcminute.
- What if I cannot see Polaris?
- Use an electronic polar alignment camera, which plate-solves the region around the pole and works even when Polaris itself is obscured, or use drift alignment, which needs no view of the pole at all.
- Why does my reticle brightness matter?
- Because Polaris is only second magnitude. A reticle that is too bright washes it out entirely, which is why adjustable illumination is worth insisting on.
- Will a polar scope from another mount fit?
- Generally not. They are sized to a specific polar axis bore and their reticles match a specific procedure. Tell us your mount and we will confirm the correct unit.
