Scientific filters are specified against published standards rather than against how pleasing the resulting image looks. A photometric filter's value lies entirely in how accurately its transmission curve matches the reference passband, because that is what makes your measurement comparable to everyone else's. - Johnson-Cousins UBVRI: The long-established photometric system, still the reference for a great deal of variable star work and much archival comparison data.

- Transmission curve accuracy: The specification that matters. A filter that is close but not matched introduces a systematic offset in your measurements.

- Can I use LRGB filters for photometry?
- Not for calibrated work. Imaging filters are designed to look good rather than to match a standard passband, so your measurements will not be comparable to published data.
- Johnson-Cousins or Sloan?
- Whichever your observing programme specifies. Johnson-Cousins has a longer archival record for variable stars; Sloan matches modern survey data and suits silicon detector response better.
- Do I need a full filter set?
- Often not. Much variable star work is done in V alone, and many transit programmes use a single broad filter. Start with what your programme requires rather than a complete set.
- Does filter size affect photometry?
- It can, through vignetting that varies across the field. Uniform illumination over the region you measure matters, so size generously relative to your sensor.
