Neutral Density and Polarizing Filters

A full Moon through a 200 mm telescope is genuinely uncomfortable, bright enough to spoil dark adaptation for the rest of the session. Neutral density and polarizing filters cut that brightness without altering colour, and a variable polarizer lets you tune the level continuously as the phase changes. David Astro carries neutral density and polarizing filters in Canada, stocked domestically and ready to ship.

The variable versus fixed choice matters more than people expect. Tell us your aperture and how often you observe the Moon and we will recommend accordingly.

Reducing Brightness Without Changing Colour

Both filter types reduce light neutrally across the visible spectrum, so lunar and planetary colour stays natural. They differ in whether the reduction is fixed or adjustable.

  • Fixed neutral density filters: Specified by transmission percentage, commonly 13% or 25%. Simple and inexpensive, but the correct strength depends on both aperture and lunar phase.
  • Variable polarizing filters: Two polarizing elements rotated relative to each other, giving continuously adjustable transmission across a wide range from a single filter.
  • Single polarizers: Used in pairs or with a reflective surface, and occasionally useful for reducing glare on Venus.
  • Aperture dependence: A 25% filter suitable for a 100 mm telescope leaves a 300 mm Dobsonian still uncomfortably bright at full Moon.
  • Phase dependence: A crescent Moon needs no reduction at all while a full Moon needs a great deal, which is the case for a variable filter over a fixed one.
  • Contrast benefit: Beyond comfort, reducing brightness genuinely improves detected detail along the terminator by preventing eye glare.

Why Choose David Astro for Neutral Density and Polarizing Filters

This is a small purchase where the wrong strength means buying twice.

  • Strength matched to aperture: We recommend transmission level against your telescope's aperture, since the same filter behaves very differently at 80 mm and 300 mm.
  • Variable recommended for regular lunar observers: If you observe the Moon across its phases, a variable polarizer replaces the two or three fixed filters you would otherwise accumulate.
  • Barrel size confirmed: We check 1.25 inch or 2 inch against your eyepieces before you order.
  • Authorized dealer: Genuine filters with manufacturer warranty, in Canadian stock.
  • Ships from Canada: No duties or brokerage fees for Canadian buyers.

Neutral Density Filters in Canada — Frequently Asked Questions

Fixed or variable?
Variable if you observe the Moon regularly, since the required reduction changes enormously between crescent and full. Fixed is adequate and cheaper if you observe occasionally at a consistent phase.
Does a Moon filter improve detail?
Yes, indirectly. Excessive brightness causes eye glare that masks low-contrast detail, particularly along the terminator. Reducing to a comfortable level genuinely reveals more.
Do these change colour?
Neutral density and good polarizers reduce light evenly across the spectrum, so lunar grey and planetary colour remain natural. Cheap polarizers can introduce a slight tint.
Can I use a variable polarizer on planets?
On Venus, yes, where glare is the main obstacle. On Jupiter and Saturn, reducing brightness rarely helps since they are not bright enough to cause glare in most apertures.
