Binocular Accessories

The difference between binoculars that get used for astronomy and binoculars that get put down after ten minutes is almost always the mounting. Held by hand at 10x, the sky shakes; on a parallelogram arm, the same binoculars show detail you did not know was there. David Astro carries binocular accessories in Canada, held in Canadian stock.

What you need depends on the binocular's weight and how high you observe. Tell us both and we will recommend a mounting.

Mounting, Supporting and Maintaining Binoculars

These accessories address stability, comfort and the practicalities of using two-eyed optics in the dark.

  • Parallelogram mounts: An articulated arm that keeps the binocular pointing at the same spot while you move it to your eye height, allowing seated observation near zenith.
  • Tripod adapters: An L-bracket connecting the binocular's centre thread to a photo tripod, adequate for lighter binoculars at modest altitudes.
  • Monopods and shoulder braces: A middle ground that removes most hand shake without the bulk of a full mount.
  • Harnesses and straps: Distribute weight across the shoulders rather than the neck, which matters considerably for anything above about 1 kg.
  • Eyecups and eyeglass adaptation: Replacement or adjustable eyecups that set the correct eye relief for spectacle wearers.
  • Cleaning and protection: Caps, cases and coating-safe cleaning supplies for optics that spend time in the field.

Why Choose David Astro for Binocular Accessories

Mounting is the accessory that determines whether a binocular becomes an astronomy instrument or stays a daytime one.

  • Mounting matched to weight and altitude: A tripod adapter is fine for a 10x50 at low altitude and useless for a 100 mm binocular pointed overhead. We match the solution to both.
  • Comfort taken seriously: A seated observer with a steady view sees fainter detail than a standing one with a shaking view, and that is the real reason to mount binoculars.
  • Thread compatibility confirmed: Not all binoculars have a tripod thread, and adapters vary. We check before you order.
  • Authorized dealer: Genuine products with manufacturer warranty, in Canadian stock.
  • Ships from Canada: No duties or brokerage fees for Canadian buyers.

Binocular Accessories in Canada — Frequently Asked Questions

Why is a parallelogram mount better than a tripod?
It lets you observe near zenith while seated, and lets another person look without readjusting anything. On a plain tripod, overhead viewing means kneeling under the binocular, which nobody does for long.
Can any binocular be tripod mounted?
Most have a centre thread under a removable cap, which accepts an L-adapter. Some compact models do not. Tell us the model and we will confirm.
At what size do I need a mount?
Above roughly 10x magnification or 1 kg of weight, a mount noticeably improves what you can see. Above 70 mm aperture, mounting is effectively mandatory.
Are harnesses worth it?
For any binocular carried for extended periods, considerably. They shift the load from the neck to the shoulders, which is the difference between an hour of comfortable observing and a sore neck.
