How does the Baader Diamond Steeltrack improve focusing on my SC/HD telescope?
It adds an external focuser, so that with the primary mirror locked, focusing is done with the Diamond Steeltrack. One example of imaging without mirror shifting is the BDS-SC on a Celestron 8" EdgeHD with built-in mirror lock.
Which telescopes will the Baader Diamond Steeltrack BDS-SC fit out of the box?
The included adapters fit all C14, C11, C9¼, C8, C6 and C5 OTAs: the 2" UNF adapter suits telescopes such as Celestron SC/HD or Meade, and the 3.3" (84.2 mm) adapter Celestron telescopes such as the C11 and C14.
Do I still use my SCT's original focus knob with the Baader Diamond Steeltrack?
One example is a telescope with a built-in mirror lock: with the primary mirror locked, focusing is done with the Baader Diamond Steeltrack, giving imaging without mirror shifting.
Can I motorize the Baader Diamond Steeltrack focuser?
Yes. All Diamond Steeltrack focusers carry a dovetail for the optional temperature-compensating Baader Steeldrive II motor focuser with controller (#2957165); a mounting instruction is included with each Steeldrive II.
How much does the focuser hold?
It is rated to lift 6 kg straight up without slipping. The factory pressure setting was chosen for photographic use; it can be increased at the cost of smoothness, or reduced for visual use.
What is included?
The BDS-SC focuser with integrated 2" clamp, the 2" UNF SCT adapter, the Celestron 3.3" SCT adapter and a 1.3 mm Allen wrench.
What is the S58 dovetail connection on the Baader BDS-SC for?
The S58 dovetail is a machined interface on the end of the focuser drawtube. It takes optional Baader direct-thread adapters for T-2, M48 or M68, or the 2" S58 ClickLock clamp (#2956258), in place of the integrated 2" clamp.
How does the Diamond Steeltrack drive differ from a Crayford or Rack & Pinion?
True diamonds form a micro-geared drive that, compared with conventional Crayford or rack-and-pinion drives, has zero backlash, zero cogging and zero flexure, running on instrument-grade roller bearings.
What is the minimum height of the Baader Diamond Steeltrack BDS-SC?
The shortest overall height of the focuser as supplied (with the standard 2" clamp) is 93 mm. If you use optional direct-thread adapters on the S58 dovetail, the height can be reduced to as little as 80 mm, (82 mm in Baader's description); on the 3.3" thread all lengths are 12 mm shorter.
Is the Baader Diamond Steeltrack BDS-SC rotatable?
The focuser is rotatable.
