  • Baader Hyperion Aspheric 72° 36mm Eyepiece - 1.25"/2"

The Baader Hyperion Aspheric 36mm Eyepiece delivers an immersive 72° apparent field of view with the 2" barrel, using a 6-element, 4-group design with aspheric lens surfaces. It is delivered with 1.25" and 2" plug-in sleeves; the field stop is 45mm with the 2" sleeve, and with the 1.25" sleeve the field is 50° with a 30mm field stop. Eye relief is 19mm, the coatings are Baader's 7-layer Phantom Group, and M43 and SP54 system threads plus a 2" SC thread in the body allow projection use and direct attachment to a Schmidt-Cassegrain.

Aspheric Optics: A 72° Field with 6 Lens Elements

In an uncorrected system rays near the edge are refracted differently from rays near the axis, so the field can blur towards the edge; aspheric correction resolves numerous imaging errors at once, giving sharpness over the entire field with reduced distortion. The 36mm has 6 lens elements in 4 groups.

The aspheric construction allows fewer glass surfaces and, with the Phantom Group coating, gives a brighter, more contrast-rich image; a higher limiting star magnitude and low weight are also among the design's advantages.

Phantom Group Coatings: 7 Layers for Maximum Contrast

Baader's proprietary Phantom Group Coating is a 7-layer broadband anti-reflection system applied to every lens surface. Each coating group is calculated for the specific glass type it's applied to, ensuring peak performance across the visual spectrum. The system is optimized for a wavelength of 520nm, the green part of the spectrum where the night-adapted human eye has its highest sensitivity.

A strong green reflex shows light between 500 and 550 nm being reflected and lost, while Phantom Group coatings appear almost colourless, showing an equally good effect across the visible spectrum, so that the least light is lost for the night-adapted eye.

1.25"/2" Sleeves and Direct 2" SC Thread

The Hyperion Aspheric 36mm is delivered with both 1.25" and 2" plug-in sleeves, so it fits 1.25" and 2" focusers and diagonals. When used in a 2" focuser, it delivers its full 72° apparent field with a 45mm field stop. In a 1.25" focuser, it operates with a 50° apparent field and a 30mm field stop.

On the telescope side there is a 2" SC thread in the eyepiece body, so the eyepiece can be screwed directly onto the end of the tube of a Schmidt-Cassegrain, without a plug-in sleeve and without a star diagonal. Visually, this very short attachment gives a larger true field of view than a wide-angle eyepiece with a 2" plug-in sleeve.

Eyepiece Projection: Integrated M43 and SP 54 Threads

Each Aspheric eyepiece has screw threads on both sides so it can be installed as a projection system in an optical beam path. On the eye side are the M43 and SP54 system threads; DSLR camera bodies can be attached directly behind the eyepiece through them, and the Aspheric is among the eyepieces with M43 and SP54 threads for afocal photography with DT-rings.

A large selection of adapter threads and transition rings is available, so the telescope's effective focal length can be changed almost arbitrarily when small star fields or planets are to be recorded at high resolution. DT-rings adapt the SP54 thread to camera filter threads from M28 to M62 (for example SP54/M28 #2958028); some need the 11mm extension ring #2958090.

    Why 72°, and Build

A 72° field is only slightly larger than the largest viewing angle of the human eye (68°), so the entire star field can be surveyed at once without having to roll the eyes.

Wide-angle eyepieces with very large fields or simple lens construction often give a nervous view, where the field disappears if the eye moves slightly. The listed net weight is 0.43 kg; the design data gives 373g with the 2" sleeve and 382g with the 1.25" sleeve, an outer diameter of 59.5mm and 84.7mm for the body above the reference plane with the 2" sleeve.

  • What is the advantage of the Baader Hyperion Aspheric 36mm's aspheric design?

Aspheric correction resolves numerous imaging errors at once, giving sharpness over the entire field with reduced distortion, and the construction allows fewer glass surfaces (6 elements in 4 groups), which with the Phantom Group coating gives a brighter, more contrast-rich image.

Why does the Hyperion Aspheric 36mm have a 72° apparent field instead of 80° or more?

A 72° field is only slightly larger than the largest viewing angle of the human eye (68°), so the whole field can be surveyed at once, while in fields of 80° and more the field cannot be taken in at once and the available light is spread over too large an area.

How do I use the Hyperion Aspheric 36mm in both 1.25" and 2" focusers?

The eyepiece comes with both 1.25" and 2" barrels. You simply attach the barrel that matches your focuser or diagonal. Note that the performance differs between the two modes:

    • 2" Barrel: Provides the full 72° apparent field of view with a 45mm field stop.
    • 1.25" Barrel: Provides a 50° apparent field of view with a 30mm field stop.

Can I attach a camera directly to the Baader Hyperion Aspheric 36mm?

Yes. The eyepiece is designed for afocal imaging and classical eyepiece projection. It has M43 and SP54 system threads on the eye side. DSLR camera bodies can be attached directly behind the eyepiece through these threads with Baader adapter rings.

What is the benefit of the 2" SC thread on the Hyperion Aspheric 36mm?

The integrated 2" SC thread allows you to screw the eyepiece body directly onto the rear cell of a Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope, bypassing the star diagonal. This very short attachment gives a larger true field of view than a wide-angle eyepiece with a 2" plug-in sleeve.

Is the Hyperion Aspheric 36mm a good eyepiece for binoviewing?

The Aspheric eyepieces can also be used on astro-binoculars, and in any telescopic binocular where the minimum eye distance is not less than 56mm. The outer diameter is 59.5mm.

What magnification does the 36mm give?

Magnification is the telescope's focal length divided by 36. On a telescope of 1000mm focal length it gives about 28x. Exit pupil is the eyepiece focal length divided by the telescope's focal ratio; at f/10 it is 3.6mm.

    What comes in the box?

Our listing ships the Hyperion Aspheric 36mm eyepiece. The Aspheric eyepieces are each delivered with 1.25" and 2" plug-in sleeves, and the specification includes a folding eyecup on the M43 thread and dust caps of 31.8mm, 45mm and 46.5mm.

What are Baader Phantom Group coatings?

Baader's 7-layer Phantom Group coatings are engineered to be most effective where the dark-adapted eye is most sensitive (around 520nm) and to have extremely low residual reflection across the entire visible spectrum. A strong green reflex shows light between 500 and 550 nm being reflected and lost; Phantom Group coatings appear almost colourless.

Will I need to refocus when switching to the Hyperion Aspheric 36mm?

The Baader Hyperion Aspheric 36mm is parfocal, as is the 31mm Aspheric. The field stop displacement to the reference plane is +/- 0mm with the 2" sleeve.
