  • Baader Morpheus 76° Eyepiece 6.5mm - 1.25"/2"

The Baader Morpheus 6.5mm eyepiece has a 76° apparent field from 8 lenses in 5 groups, with one ED and two lanthanum elements, and gives a sharp image right to the edge of the field. The 1.25" and 2" barrels are integrated into one housing, eye relief is 18.5mm, and the 55mm body was designed for binoviewing. An M43 photo-video thread under the eyecup allows eyepiece projection.

A Flat, Undistorted 76° Field of View

The Morpheus optical design produces a 76° field that is genuinely flat, with exceedingly low angular magnification distortion; the 76° is the true value calculated from field size and focal length. This means planetary disks and lunar features retain their correct shape as they transit the field. The field stop is 8.75mm.

    • Phantom Coating Group: The multi-coatings were further optimised for the Morpheus and index-matched to each of the different glasses.
    • Optimized Baffling: The internal mechanics have been ray-traced and baffled against stray light and reflections.
    • True Field of View: Deep-sky objects appear embedded in their stellar surroundings.

    18.5mm Eye Relief in a 55mm Binoviewer-Ready Body

Eye relief for the 6.5mm is 18.5mm. Eyeglass wearers can take in the full field with the Morpheus series, and the eye-lens group is made very large so that viewing is stress-free; even at too large a viewing distance the object remains visible.

Baader designed the Morpheus series for binoviewing: a 55mm outer housing diameter throughout the series allows binoviewing from 55mm interpupillary distance, even for children, and the body has been made as small as possible for nose clearance.

Dual 1.25"/2" Barrels with a 21mm Backfocus Advantage

The Morpheus features an integrated barrel system that includes both 1.25" and 2" nosepieces in a single unit. Baader's technical data gives a back focus gain of 21mm when the 2" barrel is used, compared with the 1.25" barrel.

    • Slip-Protect Safety-Kerfs: Baader's Slip-Protect Safety-Kerfs on the 1.25" and 2" barrels are numerous shallow kerfs that give additional grip and security against inadvertent drops from smooth-sided barrels, without the problems sometimes caused by traditional wide undercuts.
    • Parfocal Design: The Morpheus is listed as parfocal; the technical data gives a field stop displacement of 0mm for this focal length and +2.5mm for the 17.5mm.
    • Lightweight Construction: The net weight is 0.46 kg; the technical data gives 350g for the eyepiece and 97mm for the body above the reference plane. No metal was added simply for look or feel.

The M43 Thread for Rigid Eyepiece Projection

Hidden beneath the foldable rubber eyecup is an M43 thread, for photography and video. With the optional M43/T-2 adapter (#2958080), the Astro T-2 System and T-2 camera rings can be used for classical eyepiece projection; for afocal projection the M43/SP54 extension ring (#2954251) opens the Hyperion DT-ring system. A C-Mount adapter (#2958520) is also available for screwing matching cameras onto the eyepiece.

The distortion of the Morpheus is even lower than that of the Hyperion eyepieces, and the flat field design suits photographic projection. The included M43 extension (#2954250, 7.5mm) also adapts cameras with an M43 thread.

Field-Ready Features: From Luminescent Labels to a Cordura Holster

The Morpheus is designed for practical use under the stars. Baader's luminescent lettering glows in a soft green after the eyepiece has been in the light or briefly lit with a flashlight; the main letters shine for up to three minutes, so the focal length can be recognised in the dark.

Included are the foldable rubber/metal eyecup, the winged foldable eyecup, the Cordura holster (usable as a belt pouch or on a tripod), the focal length indicator clip (bend up its fingers to identify eyepieces by touch), the M43/M43 extension and three dust caps.

Morpheus 76° vs. Baader Hyperion 68° Eyepieces

Baader draws these differences between its two series:

    • Field of View: The Hyperion series offers a wide 68° apparent field, while the Morpheus expands this to a more immersive 76°.
    • Optical Correction: The distortion is even lower than in the Hyperion eyepieces, despite the larger field.
    • Binoviewing: The Morpheus has a 55mm outer housing diameter throughout the series (the Hyperion 68° bodies are 58mm).
  • What magnification does the Morpheus 6.5mm give?

Magnification is the telescope's focal length divided by 6.5mm; on a telescope of 1000mm focal length the 6.5mm gives about 154x. Exit pupil is the eyepiece focal length divided by the telescope's focal ratio.

What is the focal length indicator clip?

A stainless steel clip that can be attached, for example, to the eyepiece holster. Bending up one or more of its little fingers according to the focal length lets you identify each eyepiece by touch, without looking and without a flashlight.

What is the advantage of the Morpheus 6.5mm's dual 1.25"/2" barrel?

One eyepiece fits both 1.25" and 2" holders. Baader's technical data gives a back focus gain of 21mm when the 2" barrel is used, compared with the 1.25" barrel.

Can I use the Baader Morpheus 6.5mm eyepiece for astrophotography?

Yes. It has a hidden M43 thread under the eyecup.

Why is the Morpheus 6.5mm suited to binoviewing?

Baader designed the Morpheus series for binoviewing: a 55mm outer housing diameter throughout the series allows binoviewing from 55mm interpupillary distance, even for children, and the body has been made as small as possible for nose clearance. A winged eyecup is supplied for binoviewing with eyeglasses.

How do the Safety-Kerfs on the Baader Morpheus 6.5mm work?

Baader's Slip-Protect Safety-Kerfs on the 1.25" and 2" barrels are numerous shallow kerfs that give additional grip and security against inadvertent drops from smooth-sided barrels, without the problems sometimes caused by traditional wide undercuts.

What are the two different eyecups included with the Morpheus 6.5mm for?

The Morpheus 6.5mm includes two eyecups for different observing situations. The standard folding rubber/metal eyecup is for general use and can be folded down for observers wearing eyeglasses. The winged eyecup has a foldable side shield, which provides comfort and exclusion of stray light for binoviewing with eyeglasses.

What is the included M43/M43 extension used for with the Morpheus 6.5mm?

The included 7.5mm M43/M43 extension serves two main purposes. It optimises the position of the eyecup for your personal viewing position, adapts cameras with an M43 thread, and serves as a clamping surface for smartphone holders.

Will I be able to see the full 76° field of the Morpheus 6.5mm while wearing glasses?

Eye relief of the 6.5mm is 18.5mm. Eyeglass wearers can take in the full field with the Morpheus series.

What does the photo-luminescent engraving on the Morpheus 6.5mm do?

Baader's luminescent lettering glows in a soft green after the eyepiece has been in the light or briefly lit with a flashlight; the main letters shine for up to three minutes, so the focal length can be recognised in the dark.
