  • Baader Morpheus 76° Eyepiece 9mm - 1.25"/2"

The Baader Morpheus 9mm Eyepiece delivers an immersive 76° apparent field of view that remains sharp to the edge, driven by a flat-field optical design using 8 lenses. Eye relief is 21mm and the 1.25" and 2" barrels are integrated into one 55mm housing. The Morpheus eyepieces excel at planetary observation as well as deep-sky objects and give a spacewalk feeling, especially with both eyes, as the edge of the field virtually disappears.

An 8-Lens Flat-Field Design: 76° Sharp to the Edge

The Morpheus 9mm optical system uses 8 lenses in 5 groups, including one ED and two Lanthanum glass elements, with a 12.1mm field stop. The design gives a sharp image right to the edge of the field, with exceedingly low angular magnification distortion, so planets and lunar features keep their shapes as they cross the field, and the 76° is the true value calculated from field size and focal length.

    Phantom Coating® Group and Baffling

The Phantom Group multi-coatings, pioneered in the Hyperion line, were further optimised for the Morpheus and index-matched to each of the different glasses, and the internal mechanics have been ray-traced and baffled against stray light and reflections.

    Dual 1.25"/2" Barrels with Slip-Protect Safety-Kerfs

The Morpheus 9mm has a 24mm long 1.25" barrel and a 21mm long 2" barrel integrated into one eyepiece, so it fits 1.25" and 2" focusers. The back focus gain is 21mm when the 2" barrel is used, compared with the 1.25" barrel. Baader's Slip-Protect Safety-Kerfs on the 1.25" and 2" barrels are numerous shallow kerfs that give additional grip and security against inadvertent drops from smooth-sided barrels, without the problems sometimes caused by traditional wide undercuts.

21mm Eye Relief and Luminescent Labeling for an Immersive View

Eye relief of the 9mm is 21mm. Eyeglass wearers can take in the full field with the Morpheus series, and the eye-lens group is made very large so that viewing is stress-free; even at too large a viewing distance the object remains visible. The luminescent lettering glows in a soft green after the eyepiece has been in the light or briefly lit with a flashlight; the main letters shine for up to three minutes, so the focal length can be recognised in the dark.

Optimized for Binoviewing: A 55mm Body for Maximum Nose Clearance

Baader designed the Morpheus series for binoviewing: a 55mm outer housing diameter throughout the series allows binoviewing from 55mm interpupillary distance, even for children, and the body has been made as small as possible for nose clearance. The winged eyecup has a foldable side shield for binoviewing with eyeglasses.

The M43 Thread System for Eyepiece Projection

Beneath the foldable rubber eyecup, every Morpheus eyepiece conceals an M43 thread for photography and video; the distortion is even lower than in the Hyperion eyepieces and the flat field design suits photographic projection.

    • Classical Projection: Using an optional M43/T-2 adapter (#2958080), virtually any DSLR or system camera can be used through T-2 camera rings, at the correct projection distance in front of the camera.
    • Afocal Projection: For cameras with fixed lenses, the optional M43/SP54 adapter (#2954251) opens up Baader's Hyperion DT-ring system.

A Complete System in the Box

Our box list names the eyepiece, the foldable rubber eyecup with M43 metal ring, the winged eyecup and the holster. Baader's scope of supply for the series also lists a storage box, three dust caps, the M43 extension and a focal length indicator clip.

    • Two Eyecups: The foldable rubber eyecup has an integral M43-threaded metal ring that keeps it securely attached when folded; the winged eyecup is for binoviewing with eyeglasses.
    • Eyepiece Holster: The Cordura holster protects the eyepiece and can be used as a belt pouch or attached to a tripod.
    • Dust Caps: Baader's specification lists dust caps of 31.8mm (1.25"), 45mm (2") and 46.5mm (fits over the eyecup).

    Build and Weight

The housing is hard aluminium alloy with UV-stabilised anodizing around the 8 lenses, with a wide waffle-patterned rubber grip ring. The net weight is 0.46 kg; the technical data gives 360g for the eyepiece and 95mm for the body above the reference plane. The field stop displacement is 0mm, so it is parfocal with the 4.5mm to 14mm Morpheus; the 17.5mm differs by +2.5mm.

  • What makes the Baader Morpheus 9mm eyepiece feel so "immersive"?

Baader writes that the spacewalk feeling is not just a function of field of view: besides the 76° field, it names eye relief (with the related large eye lens) and ease of viewing as the primary factors. The absence of distortion lets you oversee the full field at once.

What magnification does the Morpheus 9mm give?

Magnification is the telescope's focal length divided by 9mm; on a telescope of 1000mm focal length the 9mm gives about 111x. Exit pupil is the eyepiece focal length divided by the telescope's focal ratio.

What is the M43 extension used for?

Baader includes the M43 extension (#2954250, 7.5mm) with Morpheus eyepieces. It optimises the position of the eyecup for your personal viewing position, adapts cameras with an M43 thread, and serves as a clamping surface for smartphone holders.

Why is the Morpheus 9mm suited to binoviewing?

Baader designed the Morpheus series for binoviewing: a 55mm outer housing diameter throughout the series allows binoviewing from 55mm interpupillary distance, even for children, and the body has been made as small as possible for nose clearance. A winged eyecup is supplied for binoviewing with eyeglasses.

How does the dual 1.25"/2" barrel on the Morpheus 9mm work?

Both nosepieces are integrated into one eyepiece: the 1.25" barrel (24mm) fits a 1.25" holder and the 2" barrel (21mm) a 2" holder. The back focus gain is 21mm when the 2" barrel is used, compared with the 1.25" barrel.

What do I need to attach a DSLR camera to the Morpheus 9mm eyepiece?

You will need two optional accessories. First, the Baader M43/T-2 Adapter Ring (#2958080), which threads onto the M43 threads hidden under the eyepiece's eyecup. Second, a T-2 camera ring for your camera, which attaches to the adapter.

Can I use filters with the Baader Morpheus 9mm?

Yes. The specification confirms the eyepiece is threaded for filters. The inner connection on the lens side is M28.5, which is the standard thread for 1.25" filters. So 1.25" filters can be used.

What are the "Slip-Protect Safety-Kerfs" on the Morpheus 9mm?

Baader's Slip-Protect Safety-Kerfs on the 1.25" and 2" barrels are numerous shallow kerfs that give additional grip and security against inadvertent drops from smooth-sided barrels, without the problems sometimes caused by traditional wide undercuts.

How does the luminescent labeling on the Morpheus 9mm work?

Baader's luminescent lettering glows in a soft green after the eyepiece has been in the light or briefly lit with a flashlight; the main letters shine for up to three minutes, so the focal length can be recognised in the dark.

What is the purpose of the two different eyecups included with the Morpheus 9mm?

The two eyecups provide flexibility for different observers and situations.

    • Standard Foldable Eyecup: This soft rubber eyecup is ideal for general use. It can be folded down for observers who wear eyeglasses.
    • Special Winged Eyecup: This eyecup has a foldable side shield, which provides comfort and exclusion of stray light for binoviewing with eyeglasses.

    Both fit the M43 thread.
