Description

At just over 4 inches in diameter and a few inches thick (IMX585), the new miniCAM8 is a compact, high-resolution, high-performance, cooled imaging system capable of exceptional, high-quality deep space images as well as high-quality, high-resolution planetary images. So often, compactness in astroimaging is achieved at the expense of some other critical feature found in multi-component cooled systems, such as sensor quality or thermoelectric cooling, etc. Such is not the case with the new miniCAM8. Based on Sony’s IMX585 8 MP sensor, the miniCAM8 includes full TE cooling capable of reaching a delta of -45℃ from ambient along with a built-in 8-position filter wheel for complete LRGB and narrowband imaging.

The combo version comes with LRGB and 7nm Ha, OIII and SII filters!

Great camera!

This isn't my first mono camera, but by far the easiest to set up. QHY nailed this kit! The filters were easy to install. The blister pack is set up nicely and the tweezers were a good tool. Unmounted filters can be scary, but this was easy. One thing that is not in any photos or reviews is the fact that there is a mask installed in the cover of the filter wheel. This is a nice surprise and eased my concerns about using full frame scopes. However, if you need to use different adapters not in the kit be careful that the after market adapters don't push in on the mask. Some spacer rings should help. Not all C mount adapters are made the same, and the miniCAM8 only needs 3mm of threads to screw in to the front plate. It looks like QHY has added some additional instructions on the product page concerning the filters and the mask.

As far as the drivers go I did have trouble in NINA with the native driver selection. Once I switched to ASCOM for both the camera and filter wheel things were fine. I do wish the cooling was not set to full power upon powering the unit. I work around this by powering the camera last and having NINA running and ready to connect right away.

I have only taken one sub frame in HDR mode. Looks interesting, and i can see a difference in contrast. I plan on running a session just in that mode soon.

I have more data to process, but attached is a sample of M51(cropped) with only a couple of hours on target, and The Cressent(NGC 6888, no crop, SHO). PI(BlurX, NoiseX). Both shot with a Askar PHQ65 416mm.
