  • QHYCCD QHY533M Mono

The QHYCCD QHY533M Mono camera centers on the 9 Megapixel Sony IMX533 back-illuminated sensor, delivering high-resolution images from its 1-inch square format and 3.76μm pixels. Its 14-bit A/D converter gives 16,384 levels, supported by a deep 58,000e- full well capacity and a low 1.3e- read noise floor. A 1GB DDR3 buffer ensures stable data transfer over USB 3.0 at up to 20 FPS in 16-bit mode, while the dual-stage TEC cooler achieves a -35℃ delta to suppress thermal noise with a dark current of just 0.0005e-/pixel/sec.

    QHY533M: A 9 MP BSI Camera for Low-Noise Imaging

The QHY533M is engineered for deep-sky imagers seeking the low-noise performance of a modern back-illuminated sensor in a versatile, high-resolution package. It pairs a back-illuminated sensor with a 1-inch square format.

As a monochrome camera, the QHY533M delivers maximum sensitivity and resolution, with no color filter array over the pixels. This suits LRGB and narrowband imaging of emission nebulae and galaxies.

Sony IMX533 BSI Sensor: 9 Megapixels in a 1-inch Square Format

At the core of the QHY533M is a Sony IMX533 monochrome sensor, featuring a 3008 x 3028 pixel array with a 16.05mm diagonal. The back-illuminated (BSI) structure places the sensor's wiring below the photosensitive layer, maximizing the light-gathering area of each 3.76μm pixel and boosting quantum efficiency.

The sensor's square aspect ratio is a significant practical advantage. It simplifies framing for objects that are roughly circular, like globular clusters or planetary nebulae, and keeps mosaic panels uniform in both directions.

Low Noise, High Dynamic Range: 1.3e- Read Noise and 58,000e- Full Well

The QHY533M's sensor architecture is optimized for capturing faint signals with high fidelity. It achieves a minimum read noise of just 1.3e-, allowing subtle details in nebulosity and faint galaxies to rise above the noise floor. This low-noise performance is particularly beneficial when shooting with high gain settings for short exposures or narrowband imaging.

To complement its low noise, the camera boasts a large full well capacity of 58,000e-. This deep well prevents brighter stars from saturating during long exposures, preserving their natural color and detail.

14-Bit A/D and Nearly Zero Amplifier Glow

Image data is digitized by a true 14-bit A/D converter, capturing over 16,000 levels of grayscale. This ensures smooth tonal gradations and the ability to distinguish between very fine differences in brightness within your target. QHYCCD provides TRUE RAW image output: the image is the original signal, without the noise reduction or hot pixel removal that can cause a "star eater" effect in DSLR raw files.

The QHY533M has nearly zero amplifier glow, so long exposures show little of the edge glow that readout electronics can cause, and dark frames are more uniform.

-35°C Cooling and Advanced Anti-Dew System

A regulated, dual-stage thermoelectric (TEC) cooling system actively reduces the sensor's temperature to as low as -35°C below ambient. This aggressive cooling is the key to minimizing thermal noise (dark current), which is critical for long-exposure deep-sky imaging. At a sensor temperature of -20°C, the dark current is a mere 0.0005e-/pixel/sec.

To combat condensation during humid nights, QHY has implemented a comprehensive anti-dew system. An integrated heater on the optical window prevents external fogging, and if moisture ever fogs the sensor chamber, the included desiccant tube connects to a plugged hole near the front plate for drying (you may need to supply the desiccant).

1GB DDR3 Buffer for 20 FPS Stable Capture

To help prevent dropped frames, the QHY533M is equipped with a 1GB DDR3 memory buffer. This onboard cache holds image data before it is sent to the computer over the USB 3.0 interface, providing a stable data stream even if the host computer is temporarily busy with other tasks.

This buffer is essential for high-speed imaging. The camera can sustain a full-resolution capture rate of 20 FPS at 16-bit depth or 26.5 FPS at 8-bit. With a 480-line ROI it reaches 117 FPS at 16-bit and 152 FPS at 8-bit, useful for fast focusing and short captures.

14mm Back Focus and Integrated Tilt Adjustment

The QHY533M is engineered with a short 14mm back focal distance and connects directly to the QHYCFW3S-SR without removing any part of the filter wheel, giving a very short back focal length, and the QHY533M plus CFW3S-SR can be connected to a DSLR lens.

Because the QHY533M threads onto the filter wheel, the sensor may not end up parallel to the filter wheel when the threads are fully tightened. QHYCCD's front part parallel adjustment lets you turn the front part so the sensor sits at the right angle, then fix it with a screw.

QHY533M vs. QHY533C: Monochrome Sensitivity vs. One-Shot Simplicity

The primary difference between the QHY533M (Mono) and its color counterpart, the QHY533C, lies in sensitivity and imaging workflow. Both cameras use the Sony IMX533 sensor, but the mono version offers distinct advantages for certain types of astrophotography.

    • QHY533M (Mono): By capturing light without a Bayer filter matrix, the monochrome version offers the highest possible resolution and signal-to-noise ratio. This suits faint deep-sky objects and narrowband imaging with Ha, OIII and SII filters. It threads directly onto the QHYCFW3S-SR.
    • QHY533C (Color): This version provides a simpler, one-shot-color workflow ideal for those who want to capture full-color images quickly without the complexity of filters. QHYCCD supplies the QHY533C with Adapter Kit E (E1) and a C-mount thread.

Unified Software Control: The All-In-One Driver Pack

QHYCCD provides a comprehensive "All-In-One" software package to ensure broad compatibility with popular astrophotography applications. The pack includes the drivers and plugins, whether you are using ASCOM-compliant software like N.I.N.A. or native (direct) camera support in programs like SharpCap.

The package includes the core system driver, ASCOM drivers for camera and filter wheel control, and SDKs for third-party software. Also included is QHYCCD's own EZCAP_QT software, recommended for camera tests and update management. This unified approach simplifies setup and lets you focus on imaging rather than troubleshooting drivers.

Stable 12V Power and UVLO Protection

The QHY533M's high-performance TEC cooler requires a stable 12V DC power source, delivered via the included locking power cable to prevent accidental disconnection. The camera is designed to operate between 11V and 13.8V, and maintaining a stable voltage is crucial for consistent cooling and low-noise performance.

To protect the camera's electronics, the QHY533M features Under Voltage Lock-Out (UVLO) protection. If the input voltage drops below 11V the camera warns, turns off the cooler and limits cooler power to 70% until reset. Use an adapter of at least 12V and 4A, a low-resistance cable, and a 12V regulator when running from a battery.

    845g Build and First-Light Workflow

The QHY533M weighs 845g and comes with a tripod adapter. Setup: first install your capture software, then the All-In-One driver pack. Before connecting the camera, plug it into the 12V power supply. Finally, connect the USB 3.0 cable from the camera to your computer to establish communication and begin your imaging session.

  • What is the advantage of the QHY533M's 1GB DDR3 buffer?

The 1GB DDR3 buffer acts as temporary storage for image data before it's sent to your computer. This prevents data loss (dropped frames) that can occur over a busy USB 3.0 connection, ensuring smooth and reliable capture.

How does the QHY533M's "Nearly Zero Amplifier Glow" help with deep-sky imaging?

Amplifier glow is a common source of noise that appears as a bright artifact on the edge of long exposures. The QHY533M has nearly zero amplifier glow, so raw frames are more uniform from edge to edge. While dark frames are still necessary to calibrate for dark current and hot pixels, the absence of amp glow keeps calibration simple.

Is the QHY533M's square sensor format better than a rectangular one?

A square sensor, like the 1-inch format in the QHY533M, is often preferred for astronomical objects that are roughly circular, such as globular clusters like the Hercules Cluster (M13) or planetary nebulae like the Ring Nebula (M57). It makes framing easier without rotating the camera .

Should I buy the QHY533M Mono or the QHY533C Color version?

Choose the QHY533M (Mono) for filter-based imaging, including narrowband; it needs a filter wheel and separate exposures per filter. Choose the QHY533C (Color) for one-shot color images without a filter wheel.

What is the recommended gain setting for the QHY533M?

The recommended starting gain is 68. However, the optimal gain depends on your specific conditions. For bright targets or long exposures under dark skies, you can use a lower gain to maximize dynamic range. For narrowband imaging or short exposures, a higher gain can help overcome read noise and reveal fainter signals.

How do I use the tilt adjuster on the QHY533M?

The QHY533M has a built-in tilt adjustment mechanism on the front part of the camera body. It lets you set the sensor parallel to the filter wheel after the camera is threaded on. QHYCCD's procedure: position the camera so the sensor is parallel to the filter wheel, then fix it with a screw.

What power supply do I need for the QHY533M?

The camera requires a 12V DC power supply capable of delivering at least 4A. A 12V power adapter and locking power cable are included in the box. It's crucial to use a stable power source, as voltage drops can affect cooling and trigger the camera's UVLO protection mode. Connect the 12V supply and the USB 3.0 cable before starting your software.

Does the QHY533M work with N.I.N.A. and SharpCap?

Yes. The QHYCCD All-In-One driver pack includes ASCOM drivers, and N.I.N.A. connects through the QHY plugin or ASCOM. It also includes native drivers for direct connection to software like SharpCap.
