  • QHYCCD QHY5III174M Monochrome CMOS Camera

The QHYCCD QHY5III174M Mono combines a large 1/1.2-inch Sony IMX174 sensor with an electronic global shutter, in a planetary and guiding camera. The large sensor is a great choice for solar imaging, with large pixels and high QE. The 2.3 Megapixel sensor has 5.86μm pixels and reaches 138 FPS at full resolution over USB 3.0, up to 490 FPS with a selected ROI. Full well is 32ke- and read noise runs from 2.2e- to 5.5e-.

Sony IMX174 Global Shutter: Artifact-Free Imaging at 2.3MP

The core of the QHY5III174M is its Sony IMX174 sensor, which features an electronic global shutter. A global shutter exposes all 2.3 million pixels at the same time, so moving subjects are not skewed as they can be with a rolling shutter. The IMX174 is a front-illuminated (FSI) Sony Exmore sensor.

The 1/1.2-inch format measures 11.25 mm x 7.03 mm; the 7.03 mm short side covers the whole solar or lunar disk at focal lengths up to about 750mm.

138 FPS Full-Frame: High-Speed Solar, Lunar, and Planetary Capture

The QHY5III174M reaches 138 FPS at full resolution and 8-bit over its USB 3.0 Type-B interface. SharpCap starts the camera at a low speed; set a 1 ms exposure and lower USB Traffic to raise the frame rate, and close other programs that load the CPU.

A region of interest raises the frame rate further:

    • 960x600 ROI: 262 FPS.
    • 480x300 ROI: 490 FPS.

32ke- Full Well & 12-bit ADC: Capturing High Dynamic Range Detail

The full well capacity is 32ke- and read noise runs from 2.2e- to 5.5e-.

Data is captured by a 12-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC), providing 4,096 distinct tonal levels. Output is 8-bit or 16-bit; the 16-bit mode is 12-bit data with the lower bits zero-filled. Solar samples taken with this camera include a NASA APOD of the ISS crossing the Sun with prominences by Mehmet Ergün, a chromosphere through a Daystar Gemini on an Esprit 150, and a photosphere through a Lunt solar wedge with UV/IR cut and Baader Solar Continuum filters.

    Dual-Role Guiding in an 85g, 1.25-inch Body

This is a planetary guiding camera with a custom ST-4 guide port, and a guiding cable is in the box; guiding runs in PHD through ASCOM with on-camera guiding.

The camera weighs 85g and has a 1.25-inch telescope interface with a CS-mount thread and a 12mm back focus. The included CS-C mount adapter takes C-mount lenses, and the box also holds a 1.25-inch extension tube, two 0.25 mm focusing adapters and a focus lock ring with thumb screw.

Broad Software Support: ASCOM, SharpCap, and the All-In-One Pack

QHYCCD's All-In-One pack includes the system driver and ASCOM drivers, and SharpCap is included, authorized by SharpCap. Install any third-party capture software before the pack.

The pack also includes QHYCCD's EZCAP_Qt for device tests and update management. A WDM broadcast driver gives a live signal to OBS and other live software. The camera is powered over the USB 3.0 cable; some notebook USB ports give less than 5V, which can starve it of power.

  • Why is the QHY5III174M's global shutter important for solar imaging?

A global shutter exposes the entire 1920x1200 sensor at once, so frames are not skewed the way a rolling shutter can skew them. The large IMX174 sensor is a great choice for solar imaging, and solar chromosphere, photosphere and ISS transit images have been made with this camera.

Can I use the QHY5III174M for deep-sky imaging?

It is an uncooled camera, so avoid very long exposures, which raise background thermal noise. For deep-sky shooting, take short exposures stacked in large numbers and keep some image background.

What's the benefit of the QHY5III174M's large 1/1.2-inch sensor?

A large sensor provides a wider True Field of View at a given focal length. For imagers, this means you can:

    • Capture the entire Sun or Moon with telescopes up to around 750mm focal length.

How do I use C-mount lenses with the QHY5III174M?

The QHY5III174M has a CS-mount thread and a 12mm back focus. For C-mount lenses, fit the included CS-C mount adapter, which adds the 5mm difference between CS-mount and C-mount flange distances.

How do I get the maximum 138 FPS from the QHY5III174M?

Achieving the maximum frame rate depends on several factors. First, ensure you are using an 8-bit data format. Second, use a short exposure time (e.g., 1ms). Finally, in capture software like SharpCap, you may need to lower the "USB Traffic" setting to increase bandwidth. Not all computers reach the maximum; an i7 quad-core is generally fine, and closing other CPU-heavy programs helps.

As a monochrome camera, what filters do I need for planetary imaging with the QHY5III174M?

For colour images, capture separate videos through filters such as LRGB and combine them in processing. For solar work, QHYCCD's samples used a Baader Solar Continuum filter with a UV/IR cut filter on a Lunt solar wedge.

Does the QHY5III174M require an external power supply?

No. The QHY5III174M is an uncooled camera and all its functions, including data transfer and electronics, are powered directly through the USB 3.0 cable. Some notebook USB ports output less than 5V, which leaves the camera short of power.

What is the purpose of the ST-4 port on the QHY5III174M?

The custom ST-4 port connects to your mount's autoguide port with the included guiding cable. QHYCCD's guide connects PHD through ASCOM with on-camera guiding, so corrections go through the camera to the mount.
