  • QHYCCD QHY5III585C Color Planetary & Guide Camera

The QHYCCD QHY5III585C combines Sony's 8.4 Megapixel IMX585 STARVIS II sensor with a substantial 512MB DDR3 buffer for planetary imaging and guiding. It is the enhanced version of the QHY5III485C, with high near-infrared sensitivity, greatly improved dynamic range, a large 1/1.2-inch sensor and zero glow. It reaches 41.5 FPS at the full 3856x2180 resolution, and it ships with an IR850nm filter and an IR-cut filter.

    Sony's 8.4 MP IMX585 Sensor: A 1/1.2-inch BSI Format

At the core of the QHY5III585C is the Sony IMX585, a back-illuminated color sensor with a 3856 x 2180 pixel array that delivers 8.4 Megapixels of resolution. The 1/1.2-inch format measures 11.18mm x 6.32mm, a 12.85mm diagonal, with 2.9µm pixels.

In this generation the photodiode part of the pixel well is physically deeper, so longer wavelengths penetrate deeper into the substrate, which increases sensitivity to red and near-infrared (NIR) light. The improvement is approximately 1.7 times in the near-infrared compared to the IMX485.

52,000e- Full Well and 0.77e- Read Noise

The specification table gives a full well capacity of 52,000e- and read noise from 0.77e- to 8e-. The full well is approximately three times that of the previous QHY5III485C.

The A/D converter is 12-bit, with output as 8-bit or 16-bit; the 16-bit mode is 12-bit data with the lower bits zero-filled.

    41.5 FPS Capture with a 512MB DDR3 Buffer

Like all QHY5III V2 cameras, the QHY5III585C has a 512MB DDR3 image buffer, which reduces the transfer pressure on the computer, a help for planetary photography that writes a lot of data in a short time. At full resolution the camera reaches 41.5 FPS at 8-bit or 23.5 FPS at 16-bit.

With a 640-line region of interest it reaches up to 199 FPS. The camera connects through a USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C interface.

Lucky Imaging Jupiter: Freezing Seeing at up to 199 FPS

The high frame rates of the QHY5III585C are essential for the "lucky imaging" technique used in planetary astronomy. Capturing many short frames and stacking the sharpest ones reduces the blur of atmospheric seeing.

Exposures run from 11µs to 900s. For planetary shooting, set OFFSET as low as possible so a capped image is close to 0, because a background offset upsets white balance.

Dual-Purpose Guiding with an ST-4 Port and 90g Body

QHYCCD makes the QHY5III V2 cameras planetary and guiding cameras. The QHY5III585C has a standard ST-4 style guide port, which replaces the custom interface of earlier models so a lost cable is easy to replace. QHYCCD's guide uses PHD guiding through ASCOM with on-camera guiding.

    The camera weighs 90g.

8mm & 17mm Back Focus for Maximum Compatibility

Designed for optical flexibility, the QHY5III585C offers two native back focus distances: 8mm without its adapter and 17mm with the adapter installed. The 8mm back focus of V2 cameras makes them easy to use with an OAG.

The basic top adapter has 1.25 inch threads, so you can still use a 1.25 inch filter, and its glass can be swapped. The included 1.25in to CS adapter connects CS lenses, and the CS to C adapter adds C-mount lenses.

One-Shot Color Imaging: Capturing Full Color in a Single Frame

As a one-shot color camera, the QHY5III585C uses a Bayer matrix (RGGB) permanently bonded to the sensor to capture full-color images in a single exposure. No filter wheel or separate red, green and blue frames are needed.

QHYCCD also makes the QHY5III585M, the monochrome version with the same IMX585 sensor.

QHYCCD All-In-One Pack and USB 3.0 Power

The QHY5III585C is supported by QHYCCD's All-In-One software pack, which includes the system driver, ASCOM drivers and EZCAP_Qt, and SharpCap is included in the pack, authorized by SharpCap. Install any third-party capture software before the All-In-One pack, because the pack's plug-ins need it. The camera is powered over USB; some notebook USB ports give less than 5V, which can starve the camera of power.

The camera body also features a multi-color status indicator LED. The multi-colored indicator at the back signals an abnormal status with different colors and stays off during normal operation.

    QHY5III585C vs. QHY5III485C: A 3x Full Well Upgrade

The QHY5III585C is the enhanced version of the QHY5III485C.

    • Full Well Capacity: It has approximately three times the full well of the QHY5III485C.
    • NIR Sensitivity: Approximately 1.7 times the near-infrared sensitivity of the IMX485.
    • Image Buffer: As a V2 camera the QHY5III585C has a 512MB DDR3 buffer, an 8mm back focus and an ST-4 style guide port.
  • How does the QHY5III585C's 512MB buffer help with planetary imaging?

The 512MB DDR3 buffer acts as a temporary storage for image frames before they are sent to the computer via USB 3.0. This prevents data loss (dropped frames) if the computer's hard drive or processor is temporarily busy. It also reduces the transfer pressure on the computer during planetary capture.

Can I use the QHY5III585C for imaging Jupiter's methane bands?

The included IR850nm filter cuts visible light and passes wavelengths above 850nm; the 889nm methane band needs a separate methane band filter. The IMX585 has approximately 1.7 times the near-infrared sensitivity of the IMX485.

What is the main advantage of the Sony IMX585 sensor in the QHY5III585C?

The primary advantage is its combination of high resolution (8.4 Megapixels), high sensitivity from its back-illuminated structure, and very low read noise (as low as 0.77e-). For deep-sky shooting, use short exposures stacked in large numbers, since the camera is uncooled.

Can the QHY5III585C be used as a primary guide camera?

Yes. QHYCCD makes it a planetary and guiding camera with a standard ST-4 style guide port, and its 8mm back focus suits an off-axis guider. QHYCCD's guide connects PHD through ASCOM with on-camera guiding.

Does the QHY5III585C require an external power supply?

No, the QHY5III585C is powered entirely through its USB 3.0 Type-C connection. It does not require a separate 12V power supply, which simplifies cable management at the telescope. Some notebook USB ports output less than 5V, which leaves the camera short of power.

What software do I need to use the QHY5III585C?

You will need to install the QHYCCD All-In-One driver pack from their website. This package includes the necessary system drivers, ASCOM drivers, and SDKs. SharpCap is included in the pack, and QHYCCD's guide covers SharpCap, ASCOM programs and PHD guiding.

How do the C-mount and CS-mount adapters work with the QHY5III585C?

The QHY5III585C includes both a 1.25in to CS adapter and a CS to C adapter. Add the 1.25in to CS adapter for CS lenses, then the CS to C adapter for C-mount lenses. The swappable top glass lets you keep a filter in place even when using a lens.

What does the "Electronic Rolling Shutter" on the QHY5III585C mean for planetary imaging?

An Electronic Rolling Shutter exposes the sensor line by line, rather than all at once like a global shutter. For fast-rotating planets like Jupiter and Saturn, this can cause a very slight distortion if the exposure time is long. With short planetary exposures the effect is small.
