Check vignettingThe SVBONY SV405CC is a cooled deep-sky camera built around the 11.7 megapixel Sony IMX294 color sensor. With a large 23.2mm diagonal, 4.63µm pixels, and a 14-bit ADC, it suits wide-field targets. Its two-stage TEC cooler reaches 35-40°C below ambient (tested at 30°C ambient), and it has a peak Quantum Efficiency of 75%, read noise of 1.2e- in HCG mode and a 63,000e- full well.
At the heart of the SV405CC is the 4/3" format Sony IMX294 sensor, with a 4144x2822 resolution that suits large deep-sky objects like the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) or the North American Nebula (NGC 7000). The sensor's 19.2mm x 13mm dimensions and 23.2mm diagonal give wide fields with short and medium focal length telescopes.
The 4.63µm pixels sample well across a wide range of focal lengths.
The SV405CC translates incoming light into a digital signal using a 14-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC), capturing over 16,000 levels of brightness. With a 63,000e- full well, bright stars take longer to saturate.
HCG (High Conversion Gain) mode turns on automatically at gain 120, where read noise drops to as low as 1.2e- while dynamic range stays wide.
The SV405CC has a two-stage thermoelectric cooler (TEC) rated at 35-40°C below ambient, tested at 30°C ambient. Cooling reduces the dark current that builds up during long exposures.
The regulated cooling requires an external 12V 5A power supply to operate, and USB alone runs the camera without cooling. A built-in heating plate keeps condensation off the protective window of the sealed chamber.
The SV405CC has a 256MB DDR3 buffer that holds data before it goes to your computer over USB 3.0, which helps when a laptop's USB bus is busy.
While designed for deep-sky work, this architecture also allows the camera to reach a maximum frame rate of 19 FPS at its full 11.7MP resolution. This also suits lunar and solar imaging (with a proper solar filter), allowing you to capture thousands of frames for lucky imaging and stacking.
The SV405CC camera body features a native back focus distance of just 6.5mm from the sensor to the front M42x0.75 female threads. The short distance leaves room for a filter wheel, off-axis guider or reducer within a 55mm back focus.
SVBONY includes these adapters:
The SV405CC's 23.2mm diagonal sensor suits large targets, such as expansive emission nebulae like the Orion Nebula (M42), large galaxies like the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), and wide star clusters such as the Pleiades (M45), especially when paired with a refractor or reflector under 1000mm focal length.
A 6" f/4 Newtonian has a 600mm focal length, which gives the SV405CC a wide field of view that can frame the entire core and a significant portion of the spiral arms of M31. The 63,000e- full well gives the bright core room before it saturates in your subframes.
Yes. Paired with an 8" SCT and a 2x Barlow lens, the 4.63µm pixels will be well-sampled for resolving fine detail in Jupiter's cloud bands and the Great Red Spot. Its maximum rate of 19 FPS over USB 3.0 allows you to use "lucky imaging" techniques to capture thousands of frames in a short time, letting you stack only the sharpest ones to overcome atmospheric turbulence.
Yes. The two-stage TEC cooler requires an external 12V 5A DC power supply to function. The camera's imaging sensor and electronics can be powered over the USB 3.0 cable alone for uncooled operation (e.g., for planetary), but for long-exposure deep-sky imaging, the 12V supply is necessary to activate the cooling and reduce thermal noise.
The 256MB DDR3 buffer holds image data before it goes to your computer, which helps prevent dropped frames when the computer or USB bus is busy.
It supports Windows, Linux, Mac OS, Chrome OS and Raspberry Pi, and works with SharpCap, N.I.N.A. and TheSkyX through the ASCOM platform.
HCG (High Conversion Gain) mode is a feature of the IMX294 sensor that automatically reduces read noise at high gain settings. This mode activates when the gain is set to 120 or higher. Read noise then drops to as low as 1.2e- while dynamic range stays wide.
The SV405CC has a native back focus of 6.5mm. To reach the standard 55mm required by most correctors, you need to add 48.5mm of spacing. If you add a typical 20mm thick filter wheel, you would then need to add 28.5mm of extension tubes between the filter wheel and your corrector. The SV405CC includes 16.5mm and 21mm M42 extenders, which can be combined with other spacers to achieve the precise distance required.
The SV405CC has a built-in heating plate that warms the protective optical window to prevent condensation (dew) from forming. This is especially useful in humid conditions where the cold sensor can cause moisture to collect on the glass. The manual states this heater can reach 65-70°C in a 25°C environment, and suggests contacting SVBONY if it does not.
It suits an imager moving to a first cooled camera. As a One-Shot-Color (OSC) camera, it records color without a filter wheel, and the manual gives setup steps for SharpCap and N.I.N.A.
