  • SVBONY SV605CC Cooled Color OSC Camera IMX533

The SVBONY SV605CC Cooled Color Astronomical Camera combines the 9.0 Megapixel Sony IMX533 sensor with a 2-stage TEC cooling system for deep-sky astrophotography. It has 3.76μm pixels, a peak Quantum Efficiency of 91%, read noise down to 1.0e-, a 256MB DDR3 buffer, up to 20 FPS over USB 3.0 and a 14-bit ADC.

The 9.0MP IMX533 Square Format Sensor

At the heart of the SV605CC is Sony's 1-inch IMX533 sensor, and the camera minimizes amp glow during long exposures. Its 3008x3008 square format frames a target the same way whichever way the camera sits, and the 15.968mm diagonal suits many telescopes.

The 3.76μm pixels sample finely at common focal lengths. As a one-shot color (OSC) camera, the SV605CC captures full-color images in a single exposure through its built-in Bayer matrix, with no separate filter sets needed.

91% QE, 1.0e- Read Noise, and 14-bit Dynamic Range

SVBONY's product page gives a peak Quantum Efficiency (QE) of 91% for the back-illuminated sensor, so most incoming photons at the peak wavelength become signal.

Low noise is critical for preserving that faint detail. Read noise runs from 3.3e- down to 1.0e- as gain rises, and HCG mode turns on automatically at gain 120 or higher to lower read noise without losing dynamic range. With a 50ke- full well and a 14-bit ADC (16,384 levels), the camera records a wide range of brightness in one frame.

2-Stage TEC Cooling for Low-Noise Imaging

Long exposures are essential for deep-sky astrophotography, but they also cause the camera's sensor to heat up, generating thermal noise (dark current) that can obscure faint details. The SV605CC integrates a 2-stage thermoelectric cooling (TEC) system that cools the sensor to reduce this noise.

SVBONY's product page says the cooling can lower the sensor to 30°C below ambient. This allows you to shoot calibrated, repeatable exposures by setting a consistent sensor temperature night after night. By subtracting master dark frames taken at the same temperature, you can effectively remove the remaining thermal signal, resulting in a smooth, dark background against which your target stands out.

256MB DDR3 Buffer and 20 FPS Data Transfer

The SV605CC has a 256MB DDR3 buffer that holds frames before they go to the computer, which helps when the USB connection or computer is busy, as in fast planetary capture.

The camera connects via a USB 3.0 Type-B port, which provides the high bandwidth needed to transfer the full 9.0 MP frames at up to 20 FPS. While primarily a deep-sky camera, this frame rate, combined with Region of Interest (ROI) support, lets it image the Moon and planets.

Dual 6.5mm / 17.5mm Back Focus and Adapters

There are two back focus values, 6.5mm and 17.5mm, with no note of which setup each applies to. Measure your train with the adapters you use before setting spacing to a corrector.

The camera comes with a set of adapters. With M42x0.75 female threads on the camera body, the included adapters allow you to connect to 1.25" and 2" focusers, as well as M48 threaded accessories. The package contains M42 and M48 extenders and adapters to help you reach the correct back focus for your specific optical train.

Broad OS Support for Windows, Linux, & Mac OS

It supports Windows, Linux, Mac OS, Chrome OS and Raspberry Pi.

SharpCap, N.I.N.A. (connected through ASCOM) and AstroDMx Capture.

12V 5A Cooling Power and USB Operation

The SV605CC takes power two ways. The camera's core imaging functions, including sensor readout and data transfer, are powered solely by the USB 3.0 connection, drawing less than 300mA. That is enough for short-exposure work without cooling.

To run the 2-stage TEC cooler, you must connect an external 12V 5A power supply via the DC5.5x2.1mm port. A compatible 12V power adapter is included in the box, and SVBONY's SV241 power box can run the camera, mount, focuser and dew heater from one 12V source.

  • What is the advantage of the SVBONY SV605CC's 9.0MP square sensor?

The 3008x3008 square format frames a target the same way whichever way the camera sits, which also helps when planning mosaics.

How does the TEC cooling on the SV605CC improve my deep-sky images?

The 2-stage TEC cooling system chills the IMX533 sensor, reducing the thermal noise (dark current) that builds up during long exposures. It allows you to set a specific temperature for reliable calibration with dark frames.

What do the 6.5mm and 17.5mm back focus options on the SV605CC let me do?

Two figures exist, 6.5mm and 17.5mm, with no note of which setup each applies to. Measure your train with the adapters you use before setting spacing to a flattener, reducer or coma corrector.

Can I use the SVBONY SV605CC to image the Orion Nebula (M42) with an 8" SCT at f/10?

Yes. The 3.76μm pixels give fine sampling at the long focal length of an f/10 SCT. Short, stacked exposures help keep the bright Trapezium core from saturating while you build signal on the outer nebula.

Is the SVBONY SV605CC suitable for planetary imaging of Jupiter?

While the SV605CC is primarily designed for deep-sky imaging, it can be used for planetary work. Its maximum frame rate of 20 FPS at full resolution is modest compared to dedicated planetary cameras, but using the Region of Interest (ROI) feature to capture a smaller portion of the sensor will increase this rate significantly. This allows you to "freeze" atmospheric seeing and capture detailed images of Jupiter's cloud bands and Saturn's rings.

What software is compatible with the SVBONY SV605CC?

SharpCap, N.I.N.A. and AstroDMx Capture, on Windows, Linux, Mac OS, Raspberry Pi and Chrome OS.

Does the SV605CC require an external power supply?

For basic imaging without cooling, the SV605CC can be powered entirely by its USB 3.0 connection. However, to use the 2-stage TEC cooling system, you must connect an external power source. The camera requires a 12V 5A power supply, and a compatible adapter is included in the box.

Is the SV605CC sensitive to infrared light?

Yes, the IMX533 responds to near-infrared light. The optical protective window is AR-coated and no IR-cut is specified, so many imagers add a UV/IR cut filter with a refractor.

How does the 256MB DDR3 buffer on the SV605CC help during an imaging session?

The 256MB DDR3 buffer holds frames as they are read from the sensor before they go to your computer, which helps when the computer or USB bus is briefly busy.

What is the main trade-off of using a rolling shutter on the SV605CC?

The SV605CC uses a Rolling Shutter, which exposes the sensor line by line rather than all at once. For deep-sky imaging of slow-moving objects, this has no practical downside. However, for very short exposures of fast-moving or rapidly changing targets (like planetary imaging in poor seeing), it can potentially cause slight distortion. This is rarely an issue for its intended deep-sky purpose.
