  • Chroma OIII Filter - 3nm

The Chroma OIII 3nm Filter is engineered to isolate the critical 500.7 nm emission line from doubly ionized oxygen with an extremely narrow 3 nm bandpass. Built on a solid 3.0 mm substrate, this filter achieves a peak transmission of 99.4% in collimated light while maintaining a transmitted wavefront of better than 0.25 waves/inch to preserve the sharpness of your final image. Its tight bandwidth is designed for systems at f/4.0 or slower, delivering high contrast against light pollution and the moonlit sky.

Isolating the 500.7 nm OIII Line with a 3 nm Bandpass

This filter targets the 500.7 nm line, the signature wavelength of doubly ionized oxygen and a primary signal in many emission nebulae. The exceptionally tight 3 nm full width at half maximum (FWHM) is designed to reject light outside the band, dramatically increasing the contrast of planetary nebulae like the Dumbbell Nebula (M27) and intricate supernova remnants such as the Veil Nebula (NGC 6960).

    • High-Contrast Imaging: By passing only a 3 nm sliver of the spectrum, the filter darkens the sky background more effectively than wider 5 nm or 8 nm filters, making it easier to capture faint, delicate structures from urban or suburban locations.
    • Bicolor and Hubble Palette: OIII is a fundamental component of popular false-color imaging palettes. The high signal purity from this 3 nm filter ensures clean data for combination with H-alpha and SII, producing vibrant and detailed images.

Measured Performance Down to f/2: A 1.5 nm Shift & 93.6% Peak Transmission

While designed for systems at f/4.0 and slower, Chroma provides measured data for performance in faster astrographs. At f/4, the filter's center wavelength shifts by only 0.3 nm to 500.4 nm, with peak transmission holding at 99.2%. In an f/2 system, the center wavelength experiences a more significant blue shift of 1.5 nm to 499.2 nm, and peak transmission drops to a measured 93.6%.

This blue shift is a known characteristic of all interference filters in fast optical cones. The trade-off for the 3 nm filter's extreme contrast is reduced on-band transmission in systems faster than its f/4.0 design target. For systems near f/3, there is an OIII 3nm optimized for f/2.8-f/3.6; for beams faster than f/3, use 5 nm or wider bandpasses.

    Research-Grade Build: 3.0mm Parfocal Substrate & Better Than 0.25 Waves/Inch Wavefront

Every Chroma filter is manufactured in Vermont, USA, using durable sputtered hard coatings on a single, 3.0 mm thick glass substrate. This construction prevents delamination, while anti-reflection coatings on the rear surface eliminate ghosting and internal reflections. The filter's transmitted wavefront is better than 0.25 waves per inch.

The standardized 3.0 mm thickness makes this filter parfocal with all other Chroma astronomy filters (except the LoGlow). This means you can swap between LRGB, H-alpha, and SII filters in your wheel without having to stop and refocus your camera, a critical time-saver during a short imaging window.

The 3 nm Advantage: Maximum Contrast vs. Wider Bands

Choosing a 3 nm filter over a wider 5 nm or 8 nm version is a decision about contrast. For imagers in light-polluted areas or those working during bright moon phases, the 3 nm bandpass offers a significant advantage by suppressing more unwanted background light. This superior rejection allows for longer sub-exposures and reveals fainter details that would otherwise be lost in the noise.

The primary trade-off is signal strength, especially in very fast optical systems where blue shift can move the passband partially off the emission line. A 3 nm filter is best suited for scopes at f/4 or slower, where measured peak transmission stays at 99.2% (f/4) to 99.3% (f/5).

  • What are the best targets for the Chroma 3nm OIII filter?

The 3nm OIII filter excels on emission nebulae with strong signals from doubly ionized oxygen. Prime targets include planetary nebulae like the Ring Nebula (M57) and Dumbbell Nebula (M27), and supernova remnants like the Veil Nebula (NGC 6960) and the Crab Nebula (M1). It is a crucial component for creating Hubble Palette (SHO) images.

How will the Chroma 3nm OIII filter perform in my f/2 system?

Based on measured data, in an f/2 system, the filter's center wavelength will shift 1.5 nm to 499.2 nm, and peak transmission will be about 93.6%. Peak transmission stays high, but the 500.7 nm line then sits at the passband's red half-maximum edge (497.7-500.8 nm), so transmission at the line is only about half of that peak. For beams faster than f/3, use 5 nm or wider bandpasses, at the cost of lower contrast.

Is the 3nm OIII filter always better than a 5nm or 8nm version?

Not always. The 3nm filter provides the highest contrast, which is ideal for fighting light pollution or imaging during a full moon. However, a 5nm or 8nm filter is more forgiving of fast focal ratios and can be a better choice for systems faster than f/4.

Will I need to refocus when switching from my Chroma H-alpha to this OIII filter?

No. All Chroma astronomy filters (except the LoGlow) are built on a 3.0 mm substrate, making them parfocal. You can switch between filters in your filter wheel without adjusting focus, saving valuable imaging time.

What sensor size is the 36mm unmounted Chroma OIII filter suitable for?

In a filter wheel, a 36mm unmounted filter typically suits APS-C class sensors. Full-frame sensors typically call for the 50mm round or 50x50mm square size.

Can I use this Chroma OIII filter for visual observing?

It is not recommended. A 3 nm bandpass is extremely restrictive and will result in an image that is too dim for the human eye to see effectively. These filters are designed specifically for long-exposure astrophotography with sensitive CCD or CMOS cameras.

What does the "better than 0.25 waves/inch" wavefront specification on the Chroma OIII filter mean?

It describes how little the filter distorts the light passing through it: the transmitted wavefront is better than 0.25 waves per inch, which helps preserve the star images delivered by your telescope. A filter with a poor wavefront can soften an otherwise sharp image.

How does this 3nm OIII filter help me image the Cygnus Loop from my suburban backyard?

The Cygnus Loop is rich in OIII, but its faint details are easily washed out by suburban skyglow. The Chroma 3nm OIII filter's extremely narrow bandpass blocks the vast majority of this light pollution, allowing the specific 500.7 nm light from the nebula to reach your sensor. This dramatically improves contrast and allows you to capture the nebula's complex, filamentary structure.
