Launch Visual AssistantThe Explore Scientific 82° 24mm Waterproof Eyepiece delivers an expansive, medium-power view contained within a rugged, 2-inch barrel design. It pairs an 82° apparent field with 17.5mm of eye relief, 7 elements in 4 groups, a 33.5mm field stop and an O-ring sealed, argon-purged housing.
The defining feature of this eyepiece is its 82° apparent field of view, which creates a vast, panoramic window onto the sky. This comfortable ultra-wide field naturally promotes relaxation at the eyepiece, and the effect is a full-immersion experience.
The 24mm suits globular star clusters, planetary nebulae, the bright cloud structure near the nucleus of comets and initial observations of planets. The wide field also makes averted vision easy: looking slightly to the side of a faint object puts its light on a part of your eye that is more sensitive to light, allowing you to see fainter images.
The 24mm uses 7 lens elements in 4 groups. The computer design, combining low dispersion and high refractive index glasses with durable EMD coatings, is optimized for high contrast, high resolution and flat field characteristics.
Long observing sessions require a comfortable eyepiece, and eye relief is a critical component of that comfort. The Explore Scientific 24mm eyepiece features a generous 17.5mm of eye relief, which is the distance your eye must be from the top lens to see the entire field of view. This ample distance allows you to observe in a more relaxed posture without pressing your eye right up against the lens.
The 82° Series has long eye relief; how much of the field an eyeglass wearer sees depends on the glasses.
Each eyepiece is O-ring sealed and purged with an inert gas to create a waterproof environment and a fog-proof housing.
The lenses sit in precision machined metal barrels that keep the optical train aligned for years of rugged use in the field.
The Explore Scientific 24mm eyepiece uses a 2-inch barrel format, which is essential for delivering its ultra-wide view. Its 33.5mm field stop, the opening that defines the edge of the field, is wider than a 1.25-inch barrel allows.
A tapered 2" barrel adds extra security. At 704 g and 110mm by 70mm, it may need careful balancing on smaller telescopes.
Explore Scientific Focal Extenders raise magnification while keeping the eyepiece's native apparent field and eye relief. The 2" models are the FE02-020 (2x) and FE03-020 (3x).
With the 2x the 24mm gives the magnification of a 12mm eyepiece, and with the 3x that of an 8mm.
Each eyepiece is O-ring sealed and purged with an inert gas to create a waterproof environment, giving a fog-proof housing.
The 82° field promotes relaxation at the eyepiece, so you can observe longer and details begin to materialize, and it makes averted vision easy, which helps you see fainter images.
At 2000mm focal length the 24mm gives about 83x and a true field of about 0.96°. It suits globular star clusters and planetary nebulae.
It suits initial observations of planets. For more power, pair it with the FE02-020 (2x) or FE03-020 (3x) Focal Extender. This increases the magnification while preserving the eyepiece's comfortable 17.5mm eye relief and wide 82° field.
Without an extender, the 24mm shows twice the true field. Adding a 2x Focal Extender doubles the magnification, effectively making it a 12mm eyepiece. This narrows the true field to half while the apparent field and eye relief stay the same.
To achieve a wide 82° apparent field at a 24mm focal length, a large 33.5mm field stop is required. This physical aperture is too large to fit inside a 1.25-inch barrel. That is why it needs a 2-inch focuser.
It has 17.5mm of eye relief. Explore Scientific does not state how much of the field eyeglass wearers see; that depends on the glasses.
The most accurate way to calculate the true field of view (TFOV) is to use the eyepiece's field stop diameter. The formula is: (Field Stop Diameter / Telescope Focal Length) * 57.3. For this eyepiece, the field stop is 33.5mm. In a telescope with a 2000mm focal length, the TFOV would be (33.5 / 2000) * 57.3 = 0.96 degrees.
At 704 g (about 1.55 lbs), this is a heavy eyepiece. When switching from a much lighter 1.25-inch eyepiece you may need to rebalance the telescope.
EMD (Enhanced Multilayer Deposition) is Explore Scientific's name for its durable multilayer lens coatings, which it pairs with edge-blackened lenses and flat black internal surfaces to keep internal reflections to a minimum.
It measures 110mm long and 70mm wide and weighs 704 g, with a tapered 2" barrel.
