Launch Visual AssistantThe Explore Scientific 92° 12mm Long Eye Relief Waterproof Eyepiece delivers an immersive, hyper-wide viewing experience through its expansive 92° apparent field of view. It has 8 elements in 6 groups, long eye relief, a tapered 2" barrel and an O-ring sealed, argon-purged housing, and weighs 1089 g.
You may be startled at the wide expanse of inky black sky the first time you look through a 92° Series eyepiece, and may even forget there is an eyepiece between you and the universe. With an apparent field close to the maximum for hyper-wide designs, objects are easier to locate, and in a non-driven telescope an object stays in the field a very long time before you need to adjust.
Hyper-wide eyepieces also make averted vision easy: looking slightly to the side of a faint object puts its light on a part of your eye that is more sensitive to light, allowing you to see fainter images.
The 92° Series has an extra long eye relief design.
Long eye relief lets you keep your eye at a relaxed distance from the lens.
The 12mm uses 8 elements in 6 groups. It has an optimized optical design, exotic glass combinations and durable coatings.
Each eyepiece is O-ring sealed and purged with an inert gas to create a waterproof environment, with a waterproof, fog-proof housing.
The eyepiece needs a 2" focuser. A tapered 2" barrel adds extra security. It measures 152mm long and 70mm wide.
At a weight of 1089 g (2.4 lbs), this is a substantial ocular. Expect to rebalance the telescope when switching to or from much lighter 1.25" eyepieces.
To calculate the magnification, simply divide your telescope's focal length by 12mm. For example, in a telescope with a 2000mm focal length, this eyepiece provides 167x magnification.
Other examples: 50x at 600mm, 100x at 1200mm. For more power, Explore Scientific's 2" Focal Extenders (FE02-020 2x, FE03-020 3x) multiply the magnification; the catalog lists optional focal extenders for the 92° Series.
Its hyper-wide field makes objects easier to locate and keeps them in view longer in a non-driven telescope. At 2000mm focal length it gives about 167x.
With a manual telescope like a Dobsonian, objects drift across the field of view due to Earth's rotation. With the 92° field, an object stays in view for a very long time before any adjustment is needed.
The 92° Series is an extra long eye relief design.
Each eyepiece is O-ring sealed and purged with an inert gas to create a waterproof environment, giving a fog-proof housing.
To find the magnification, divide your telescope's focal length (in millimeters) by the eyepiece's focal length. For this eyepiece, the formula is: Magnification = Telescope Focal Length / 12mm. For example, a telescope with a 2400mm focal length would achieve 200x magnification.
The 92° Series has a 10° wider apparent field and Explore Scientific's extra long eye relief design, in a heavier 2" body. At the same magnification a 92° field is about 12% wider than an 82° field.
At 1089 g (2.4 lbs), this is a heavy eyepiece. When switching from a lightweight eyepiece you will likely need to rebalance the telescope.
Explore Scientific's 2" FE02-020 2x Focal Extender gives this eyepiece the magnification of a 6mm. In Explore Scientific's words, 3 eyepieces offer 6 magnification choices with a focal extender.
Keep the two included dust caps on when the eyepiece is not in use.
