  • Explore Scientific ED80-FCD100 Series Air-Spaced Triplet Refractor Telescope + 0.8x Focal Reducer (Bundle)

The Explore Scientific ED80-FCD100 bundle combines an 80mm f/6 triplet refractor with a dedicated 0.8x focal reducer, creating a fast f/4.8 imaging system for wide-field astrophotography. With a native focal length of 480mm and a reduced length of 384mm, the 7.5 lb tube uses HOYA FCD100 ED glass in an air-spaced triplet that virtually eliminates chromatic aberration. The 2.5" hexagonal focuser supports imaging setups up to 10 lbs, and the reducer takes a 42 mm T-ring and needs 55mm (+/- 2mm) of back spacing.

An Astrograph Bundle for Wide-Field Imaging

This package combines the FCD100 80mm optical tube with the 0.8x Focal Reducer made for the FCD100-0806-02. The result is a 5-element optical system for astrophotographers and visual observers.

It suits imagers using DSLR, mirrorless or dedicated astronomy cameras; no sensor size is stated for the reducer. The 7.5 lb tube is light enough for a transportable equatorial mount. At 384mm an APS-C sensor covers about 3.5 by 2.3 degrees by plain arithmetic, enough for the Andromeda Galaxy (M31).

The 80mm Air-Spaced Triplet: True Apochromatic Optics

At the core of the ED80 is an apochromatic, air-spaced triplet objective lens. A three-lens design gives more freedom to correct chromatic aberration, the false color fringing seen around bright objects in less-corrected scopes, than a simpler doublet or achromat.

The air-spaced triplet virtually eliminates chromatic aberrations, and its proprietary EMD multi-layer coatings optimize light transmission.

    HOYA FCD100 Glass

The triplet objective uses HOYA FCD100 extra-low dispersion (ED) glass. ED glass reduces the secondary spectrum, the residual color error that can remain even in well-corrected doublet lenses.

Chromatic aberration correction is exceptional and color fidelity true-to-life, with sharp, high-contrast views of lunar details, planetary rings and deep-sky objects.

Native f/6 Performance: A 480mm Focal Length for Versatility

Without the reducer, the ED80 operates at its native 480mm focal length and an f/6 focal ratio. This gives a slightly narrower field, about 2.8 by 1.9 degrees on an APS-C sensor by plain arithmetic, suited to medium targets such as the Dumbbell Nebula (M27) region, the Pleiades (M45) or the Orion Nebula (M42).

For visual use, swap the reducer for the diagonal and add eyepieces for views of the Moon, Jupiter and Saturn. The ED80 also makes a versatile guiding scope when paired with larger telescopes.

    The 0.8x Reducer: A Fast f/4.8, 384mm Astrograph

The included 0.8x Focal Reducer has two elements. It shortens the focal length to 384mm and changes the focal ratio to f/4.8. On an APS-C sensor the field is about 3.5 by 2.3 degrees by plain arithmetic, which frames the Heart Nebula (IC 1805) or the core of the North America Nebula (NGC 7000).

On extended objects, f/4.8 needs about 64% of the exposure time required at f/6 for the same signal ((4.8/6) squared is 0.64).

Camera Connection: Achieving the 55mm Back Focus

The 0.8x Focal Reducer is threaded to accept a standard 42 mm T-ring (M42x0.75) and has 55mm (+/- 2mm) of back spacing to the camera sensor. The package list also includes an adapter with 42 mm T2 ring thread.

    • DSLR Cameras: A DSLR on a standard T-ring for its lens mount comes close to the 55mm spacing.
    • Dedicated Astro Cameras: For cooled astronomy cameras, you will need spacers to place the sensor 55mm (+/- 2mm) from the reducer.
    • T-Ring: You need a 42mm T-ring for your camera's lens mount (not included).

    The 2.5" Hex Focuser

The ED80-FCD100 is equipped with a 2.5" hexagonal rack-and-pinion focuser, rugged and providing precise control. The package includes two focuser extension tubes.

It supports imaging setups up to 10 lbs (4.5 kg). Weigh your camera, filters and any guider and stay within that figure.

Mechanical Design: A 7.5 lb Tube with Vixen Dovetail

The optical tube assembly weighs 7.5 lbs and is 475mm long retracted (381mm without the dew shield).

The telescope has a Vixen-style dovetail. Explore Scientific's package list includes a built-in dew shield, a dust cover/lens cap and the Hybrid Finder Scope Base installed on the scope, which accepts legacy Explore Scientific finder brackets and mini dovetail-type finder brackets (finder scope not included).

Visual Observing Potential: What You Need to Know

While this bundle is optimized for astrophotography, the ED80-FCD100 also works visually, with sharp, high-contrast views of lunar details, planetary rings and deep-sky objects.

The package for this bundle includes a 99% reflective 2-inch diagonal (with a 1.25-inch adapter); swap the reducer for it and add eyepieces, which are not included. The ED80 is a grab-and-go instrument.

  • What is the main advantage of the ED80-FCD100's triplet design with HOYA glass?

The air-spaced triplet objective, using HOYA FCD100 extra-low dispersion (ED) glass, provides apochromatic performance. Its primary advantage is the virtual elimination of chromatic aberration (false color). Views are sharp and high-contrast, with true-to-life color fidelity.

How does the included 0.8x reducer change the ED80-FCD100's performance for imaging?

The 0.8x reducer transforms the telescope for wide-field astrophotography. It shortens the effective focal length from 480mm to 384mm and makes the optical system "faster" by changing the focal ratio from f/6 to f/4.8. The wider field suits large nebulae, and the faster ratio needs about 36% less exposure time on extended objects.

What kind of mount do I need for the 7.5 lb Explore Scientific ED80-FCD100?

The tube weighs 7.5 lbs and has a Vixen-style dovetail. Add the weight of your camera and accessories and choose a Vixen-saddle mount whose imaging capacity comfortably exceeds the total. Explore Scientific also sells this tube and reducer as a package with its iEXOS-100-02 mount.

Can I use the Explore Scientific ED80-FCD100 for visual astronomy?

Yes, it is an excellent visual instrument. However, this bundle is configured for imaging. To use it visually, swap the 0.8x reducer for a star diagonal (Explore Scientific's package list includes a 99% reflective 2-inch diagonal) and add eyepieces, which are not included.

How do I attach my DSLR or astronomy camera to the ED80-FCD100 bundle?

The 0.8x reducer has standard male M42x0.75 T-threads. You will need a 42 mm T-ring for your camera's lens mount. It needs 55mm (+/- 2mm) of back spacing to the camera sensor. A DSLR on a standard T-ring comes close; mirrorless and astronomy cameras usually need spacers.

What is the benefit of the 2.5" hexagonal focuser on the ED80?

The 2.5" hexagonal focuser is rugged, with precise control, and is rated for imaging setups up to 10 lbs.

Is the ED80-FCD100 a good telescope for imaging the Orion Nebula (M42)?

Yes. With the 0.8x reducer, an APS-C sensor covers about 3.5 by 2.3 degrees at 384mm, so M42, M43 and the Running Man Nebula fit with room around them. The bright core needs short exposures alongside long ones to avoid saturating it.

What does "back focus" mean and why is the 55mm distance important?

Back focus (back spacing) is the required distance between the focal reducer and the camera's sensor. For the included 0.8x reducer, this distance must be 55mm (+/- 2mm). Staying within that range helps keep stars sharp toward the corners of the frame.

Is this ED80-FCD100 bundle suitable for high-magnification planetary imaging of Jupiter or Saturn?

While the ED80's optics are sharp enough for planetary viewing, its native 480mm focal length is quite short for serious planetary imaging, which usually uses much longer effective focal lengths. To increase the image scale for planets, you would add a Barlow lens (not included) in place of the reducer.

Does the Explore Scientific ED80-FCD100 come with a finder scope or case?

No finder scope or case. Explore Scientific's package list gives the telescope with its 2.5-inch focuser, two focuser extension tubes, built-in dew shield, dust cover/lens cap, Hybrid Finder Scope Base (finder scope not included), a 99% reflective 2-inch diagonal, and the 0.8x reducer with end caps and an adapter with 42 mm T2 ring thread. Eyepieces are not included.
