Explore Scientific

Explore Scientific occupies a useful place in the market: optics and eyepieces built to a standard that used to cost considerably more, backed by a transferable warranty. Their waterproof, argon-purged wide-field eyepieces and FCD-100 air-spaced apochromatic refractors are the products most often recommended to observers who have outgrown entry-level gear. David Astro carries Explore Scientific products in Canada, held in stock for fast domestic shipping.

Our team uses these instruments in the field, including in the cold and damp conditions where the argon purging in the eyepiece line genuinely earns its keep. We can tell you where the line's strengths are and where a different brand suits your use better.

The Explore Scientific Lineup

Explore Scientific covers visual and imaging from beginner through advanced, with the eyepiece series being the best-known part of the catalogue.

  • 62, 68, 82 and 92 degree eyepieces: Waterproof and argon-purged so internal surfaces cannot fog, which matters on humid Canadian summer nights and in rapid temperature drops.
  • 100 degree series: Very wide apparent field designs for immersive views, particularly effective in undriven Dobsonians where field width equals tracking time.
  • ED apochromatic refractors: FCD-100 and FCD-1 glass air-spaced triplets with carbon fibre and aluminium tube options, suited to both wide-field imaging and high-contrast visual use.
  • Truss-tube and solid-tube Dobsonians: Large-aperture visual instruments with collapsible designs that make transport realistic.
  • Maksutov-Newtonian and Cassegrain optics: Long focal length designs for planetary and lunar detail.
  • Diagonals, Barlows and accessories: Dielectric diagonals, focal extenders and finders designed around the rest of the line.

Why Choose David Astro for Explore Scientific

Explore Scientific's range is broad enough that the wrong choice within it is easy. We narrow it against your telescope and your sky.

  • Eyepiece series matched to focal ratio: The wider series perform best in fast telescopes where cheaper designs break down at the edge; in slow scopes the narrower series is often the better value.
  • Weight and balance checked: The 100 degree eyepieces are heavy enough to unbalance a small Dobsonian, and we will tell you before you order rather than after.
  • Authorized dealer: Full manufacturer warranty, with the transferable coverage properly registered and warranty handled domestically.
  • Canadian stock: In-stock items ship from Canada with no duties or brokerage fees for Canadian buyers.
  • Setup and collimation support: In-house help with first light on the larger Dobsonians and Newtonians.

Explore Scientific in Canada — Frequently Asked Questions

What does argon purging actually do?
It replaces the air inside the eyepiece with dry argon and seals it, so interior lens surfaces cannot fog when the eyepiece is moved between warm and cold air. In Canadian conditions that happens constantly.
Is the 82 or the 92 degree series better?
The 92 series has a wider field and better edge correction in fast telescopes, at more weight and cost. In an f/8 or slower scope the 82 series performs very close to it for considerably less.
Are the ED refractors good for imaging?
Yes, paired with a matched field flattener. The triplet designs control colour well enough for broadband imaging, and the focusers on the current models handle typical imaging trains.
Is the warranty valid if I buy in Canada?
Yes, and it is handled here. As an authorized dealer we register and service warranty claims domestically, without international shipping.

Choosing within the range?

Tell us your telescope and what you observe, and we will narrow it down. Canadian stock, warranty handled here.
