  • Sky-Watcher AZ-GTi Mount

The Sky-Watcher AZ-GTi is an alt-azimuth GoTo mount with a 5 kg (11 lb) payload capacity and a mount head that weighs 1.3 kg (2.9 lb). Controlled entirely over its built-in Wi-Fi via the SynScan Pro app, it gives you access to a database of over 42,900 celestial objects. With the included adjustable aluminum tripod and 0.5 kg pier extension, the complete system weighs about 4 kg (8.6 lb) and runs on 8 AA batteries or an external 7.5 to 14 V DC supply.

DC Servos, 6480 Gear Ratio, and Freedom Find Encoders

At the core of the AZ-GTi are DC servo motors that drive both axes through a 6480 gear ratio, delivering a pointing resolution of 2,073,600 counts per revolution, or 0.625 arc-seconds. For precise GoTo slewing and tracking, fully tighten the clutches for all motor-driven use, which gives the best pointing accuracy. Half engage them to point the telescope by hand while stopping it from swinging freely, or fully loosen them to move it quickly.

The AZ-GTi is also equipped with Sky-Watcher's Freedom Find™ technology. This system uses auxiliary encoders on both axes with a resolution of 1068 counts per revolution, allowing the mount to keep track of its position even if you manually move it. You can loosen the clutches, point your telescope by hand to a new area of the sky, and re-engage them without losing your alignment. The feature can be disabled in the SynScan app or hand controller; do so for the best pointing accuracy if you will not move the mount by hand after alignment.

5 kg Payload and Vixen-Style Saddle

The 5 kg (11 lb) payload suits compact telescopes and cameras with a Vixen-style (V) dovetail.

To mount your telescope, loosen the altitude clutch, rotate the saddle until the dovetail groove is horizontal, and tighten the clutch again. After loosening the saddle's locking knob, you slide your telescope's dovetail bar into the groove and secure it. Before letting go, check the balance by loosening the altitude clutch while holding the tube, sliding the dovetail bar forward or backward until the telescope remains level on its own.

The SynScan Pro App and its 42,900+ Object Database

The AZ-GTi creates its own Wi-Fi network (with an SSID of SynScan_xxxx), allowing you to connect your smartphone or tablet directly to the mount without needing an internet connection. Once powered on, you have 15 minutes to connect a device before the mount's Wi-Fi automatically turns off to conserve power. The connection uses UDP on port 11880 to the mount's IP address of 192.168.4.1.

The free SynScan Pro app for iOS and Android runs the star alignment and GoTo control, with a database of over 42,900 objects (skywatcher.com). An optional SynScan hand controller can also be plugged into the dedicated hand control port for wired operation.

Time-Lapse and DSLR Control: The SynScan PTZ App and SNAP Port

For time-lapse video, Sky-Watcher's separate SynScan PTZ app controls the mount instead of SynScan Pro.

The mount also has a SNAP port for camera shutter control. With an appropriate, separately sold shutter release cable for your Canon, Nikon, Sony, or Olympus camera, the mount can trigger your DSLR's shutter. skywatcher.com describes a 60-second preset exposure setting: once the camera is plugged into the mount and a shot is fired, it keeps taking 60-second exposures until the cable is removed, with no separate intervalometer.

    Weights and Power

The mount head weighs 1.3 kg (2.9 lb), while the included aluminum tripod and pier extension add 1.9 kg and 0.5 kg respectively, bringing the total assembled weight to about 4 kg (8.6 lb).

The mount can be powered in two ways. An internal battery compartment holds 8 AA batteries (not included) , or you can connect an external power supply providing DC 7.5 to 14 V at a minimum of 0.75 A through a 2.0mm ID / 5.5mm OD center-positive barrel plug.

Vixen Saddle, Tripod, and Pier Extension

The AZ-GTi system includes an adjustable-height aluminum tripod with 1.25-inch legs and an accessory tray. The tray keeps the legs firmly expanded so the tripod cannot tip over, and should always be used. The mount head attaches to the tripod via a standard 3/8"-16 thread, and a 1/4"-20 adapter is included, so the head also fits photo tripods with either thread.

The 0.5 kg pier extension fits between the tripod and the mount head. The manual says a short tube that does not hit the tripod legs when pointed high up can go on the tripod directly.

    Step-by-Step Field Setup and Alignment

First, extend the tripod legs on level ground and install the accessory tray. Attach the pier extension if needed for your telescope, then screw the mount head onto the tripod's 3/8"-16 bolt, tightening it moderately.

Once the mount is assembled, install your telescope and balance it on the altitude axis. Power on the mount and connect your phone or tablet to the "SynScan_xxxx" Wi-Fi network. Open the SynScan Pro app, which will guide you through the star alignment. After centering one or more bright stars in your eyepiece as prompted by the app, the mount is aligned and ready for GoTo and tracking.

  • How much can the Sky-Watcher AZ-GTi mount carry?

    The Sky-Watcher AZ-GTi carries 5 kg (11 lb), on a Vixen-style (V) dovetail saddle.

How do I power the AZ-GTi mount in the field?

You have two options for powering the AZ-GTi mount. You can use the internal battery compartment, which holds 8 AA batteries (not included), or connect an external power source that supplies DC 7.5 to 14 V at 0.75 A.

Is the AZ-GTi an equatorial mount?

No. Sky-Watcher's material describes the AZ-GTi as an alt-azimuth mount. For photography it lists the SynScan PTZ app for time-lapse and a 60-second preset shutter function through the SNAP port.

Do I need an internet connection to use the AZ-GTi's Wi-Fi control?

No. The mount itself acts as a Wi-Fi hotspot, broadcasting its own network (with an SSID like SynScan_xxxx). You connect your smartphone or tablet directly to the mount's network to control it. You must establish this connection within 15 minutes of powering on the mount, or its Wi-Fi will automatically shut down.

Can I attach the AZ-GTi mount head to my own camera tripod?

Yes. The base of the AZ-GTi mount head has a standard 3/8"-16 threaded socket and includes an adapter for the smaller 1/4"-20 thread. The manual advises tightening the bolt moderately, as over-tightening can damage the mount's internal parts.

How does the Freedom Find™ feature on the AZ-GTi work?

The AZ-GTi has auxiliary encoders on both axes that keep track of the mount's position. This allows you to loosen the clutches, move the telescope by hand to a new target, and re-lock the clutches without losing your star alignment. For the best pointing accuracy, the manual recommends disabling this feature if you don't plan on moving the mount by hand.

How many objects are in the Sky-Watcher AZ-GTi's database?

When controlled by the SynScan Pro app, the AZ-GTi gives you access to a database containing over 42,900 objects, including stars, planets, nebulae, galaxies, and star clusters.

Can the AZ-GTi trigger my camera's shutter for photos?

Yes. The mount has a SNAP port for connecting a shutter release cable (sold separately) to your DSLR. The mount includes a 60-second preset exposure function that will continuously trigger 60-second shots until the cable is unplugged.

How do I properly balance a telescope on the AZ-GTi?

First, securely lock your telescope's Vixen-style dovetail bar in the mount's saddle. Then, while firmly holding the telescope tube, fully loosen the altitude clutch wheel. Slide the dovetail bar forward or backward within the saddle until the telescope remains horizontal without support. Once it's balanced, tighten the altitude clutch.

What is the pier extension for, and when should I use it with the AZ-GTi?

The included pier extension raises the mount head higher above the tripod. You should use it if you have a longer telescope tube that might hit the tripod legs when you point it high in the sky, towards the zenith. A short tube that does not hit the legs can go on the tripod directly.

Can the AZ-GTi make time-lapse videos with my camera?

Yes. Connect to the mount over Wi-Fi and use Sky-Watcher's SynScan PTZ app, which skywatcher.com names for video time-lapse.
