The Lunt Solar Range

A hydrogen-alpha system has three parts: the etalon that defines the narrow passband, the blocking filter that removes everything else, and the telescope that feeds them.

  • Dedicated hydrogen-alpha telescopes: Complete instruments from 40 mm through 150 mm aperture, with the etalon and blocking filter matched to the optic.
  • Pressure tuning: Adjusting air pressure in the etalon shifts the passband slightly off the line centre, which is how you trade disc detail for prominence visibility during a session.
  • Blocking filter size: B600, B1200 and larger determine the usable field. Larger blocking filters are needed for full-disc imaging with bigger sensors.
  • Double-stack modules: A second etalon narrows the passband further, substantially increasing surface contrast at the cost of overall brightness and price.
  • Calcium-K modules: Filters at 393 nm showing the chromospheric plage network, primarily an imaging wavelength since the eye responds poorly there.
  • Herschel wedges and white-light options: High-contrast white-light observing for refractors as a complement to hydrogen-alpha.

Lunt Solar Systems in Canada — Frequently Asked Questions

What does pressure tuning actually change?
It shifts the etalon's passband slightly off the hydrogen-alpha line centre. On-band gives maximum disc detail; slightly off-band brings prominences at the limb into better relief. You adjust it during the session.
Which blocking filter size do I need?
B600 is generally adequate for visual use and small sensors. For full-disc imaging or larger sensors, B1200 or above prevents the field being clipped. Tell us your camera and we will confirm.
Is double stacking worth it?
For surface detail, dramatically so — filaments and active region structure gain considerable contrast. For prominences it adds less, since those are already high contrast against the sky.
Can I use a Lunt system in winter?
Yes. Etalons tune more stably in cool air than in summer heat, though low winter sun means a long atmospheric path and often softer seeing. Solar activity is observable year round.
