What Actually Improves a Mount in Use

Most mount complaints resolve to one of four things: alignment accuracy, balance, clearance or power stability. Each has a specific accessory answer.

  • Polar scopes and alignment aids: Illuminated reticles and electronic polar alignment cameras that reduce alignment from a lengthy drift procedure to a few minutes.
  • Counterweights and extension bars: Correct balance reduces motor load and improves guiding; an extension bar lets a short heavy tube be balanced with less total weight.
  • Pier extensions: Raise the mount head so a long tube clears the tripod legs at the meridian, which is the fix for the most common and most annoying mechanical collision.
  • Equatorial wedges: Convert an alt-azimuth fork mount to equatorial tracking, eliminating field rotation for imaging.

Do I need a pier extension?
If your telescope strikes a tripod leg when crossing the meridian, or you cannot reach targets near the pole, yes. Send us your tube length and mount model and we will calculate the required height.
What counterweight do I need?
Enough to balance your payload at a sensible position on the shaft — roughly two thirds out, not at the very end. Shaft diameter is mount-specific, so tell us the model rather than the weight alone.
Is an electronic polar alignment camera worth it?
For imaging, usually yes. It reaches better accuracy than a polar scope in a fraction of the time and works when Polaris is obscured, which matters from urban backyards.
Why does my mount stall in the cold?
Most often voltage sag under load rather than a mechanical fault. Cold thickens lubricant, current draw rises, and an undersized supply or a long thin cable drops voltage below the mount's tolerance.
