Optec

Optec builds instrument-grade control hardware: temperature-compensating focusers, precision rotators, instrument selectors that switch between cameras without disassembly, and calibration panels that open and close on command. Much of it is aimed at observatories and remote installations where nobody is present to intervene. David Astro carries Optec products in Canada, in Canadian inventory and shipped domestically.

Configuring a remote-capable train involves several interacting components. Tell us your telescope, cameras and automation software and we will plan it as one system.

Optec's Instrument Control Range

The common thread is removing the need for a person at the telescope, whether that telescope is in a backyard or three hours away.

  • Temperature-compensating focusers: Absolute-position focusers with integrated temperature probes that shift focus automatically as the tube cools through the night.
  • Focus controllers: Control hardware supporting multiple focuser types and integrating with the common automation packages.
  • Precision rotators: Absolute-position camera rotation for framing, mosaics and off-axis guide star selection.
  • Instrument selectors: Route the light path to one of several instruments on command, so a spectrograph and an imaging camera can share one telescope without physical changes.
  • Automated flat panels: Motorized covers that close over the aperture and illuminate for calibration frames, then reopen — essential for unattended flats.
  • Telecompressors: Focal reducers for Cassegrain and other long focal length systems, widening the field and shortening exposures.

Why Choose David Astro for Optec

Remote-capable hardware only pays off if every piece integrates, and integration is where these projects stall.

  • System integration planned: We check that focuser, rotator, panel and cameras all work within your chosen automation software before you commit to any of them.
  • Temperature compensation set up: We help determine the coefficient for your specific tube, which is what makes automatic focus compensation actually accurate.
  • Back-focus budgeted: Focusers, rotators and selectors all consume spacing, and we plan the total against your corrector's requirement.
  • Authorized dealer: Full manufacturer warranty with diagnostics handled in Canada, which matters for remote installations.
  • Ships from Canada: No duties or brokerage fees for Canadian buyers.

Optec in Canada — Frequently Asked Questions

How does temperature compensation work?
A probe measures tube temperature and the controller shifts focus by a coefficient you determine for your telescope. Once set, focus holds through the night without refocusing routines.
What is an instrument selector for?
It routes the telescope's light to one of several attached instruments on command. It is mainly useful where a telescope serves multiple purposes, such as imaging and spectroscopy.
Do I need an automated flat panel?
For unattended or remote operation, yes — otherwise someone must cover the telescope for flats. For a backyard setup where you are present, a manual panel is adequate.
Will these work with my automation software?
Optec hardware supports the common packages, but the specific combination matters. Tell us what you use and we will confirm before you order.
