What makes the SESTO SENSO 3 SC different?
It uses the Direct Pulley Clamp (DPC), a backlash-free pulley-driven coupling, with an integrated position encoder, so you can focus by hand without losing motor position. Its Automatic Calibration mode, not available in other SESTO SENSO 3 models, finds the travel limits of SC-type focusers without manual intervention.
Will the SESTO SENSO 3 SC work with my Celestron EdgeHD 9.25"?
No. PrimaLuceLab explicitly states that the SESTO SENSO 3 SC is not compatible with the Celestron EdgeHD 9.25" model, even though it fits other EdgeHD sizes (8", 11", and 14").
Can I still manually focus my Celestron C8 with the SESTO SENSO 3 SC installed?
Yes. The DPC system is designed to allow full manual control. You can turn the manual knob on the motor whenever you need to, and the integrated encoder tracks the movement, so the focus position stays known when you switch between visual and imaging.
How does the SESTO SENSO 3 SC handle remote operation in an observatory?
The Automatic Calibration mode finds the travel limits of your focuser without manual intervention, so you can calibrate it remotely. It connects by USB-C to an EAGLE or Windows 10/11 PC, and the ASCOM driver lets ASCOM software such as NINA or Sequence Generator Pro control it.
What software is compatible with the SESTO SENSO 3 SC?
The SESTO SENSO 3 SC works with PrimaLuceLab's own PLAY software for an integrated experience, especially when using an EAGLE computer. It comes with an ASCOM driver (tested with ASCOM platform 7); the manual gives setup steps for:
- NINA
- Sequence Generator Pro (SGP)
- MaxIm DL
Do I need an EAGLE computer to use the SESTO SENSO 3 SC?
No, an EAGLE is not required. You can connect the SESTO SENSO 3 SC directly to any Windows 10/11 computer via its USB-C port. You can also control it completely wirelessly using its built-in WiFi and the Virtual HandPad on any smartphone or tablet. With an EAGLE you also get GHOST mode (no USB cable) and automatic DARK mode when a PLAY sequence starts.
Can I power the SESTO SENSO 3 SC from my laptop's USB port?
No. The SESTO SENSO 3 SC requires an external 12V DC power source to operate the motor. USB alone is not sufficient. A blinking PWR LED means it is not receiving 12V or is not yet calibrated.
Can the SESTO SENSO 3 SC control an ARCO rotator?
Yes. The SESTO SENSO 3 SC has an ARCO port: one compact cable carries both data and power to the optional ARCO rotator, with no additional cables. Turn on ARCO enable in the Virtual HandPad options.
I use NINA for imaging; how does the SESTO SENSO 3 SC connect?
You connect the SESTO SENSO 3 SC to NINA via its ASCOM driver. In NINA's Equipment tab, select the PLL ASCOM focuser driver, choose the COM port shown in Windows Device Manager and connect. If autofocus shows irregular step movements, the manual suggests connecting through the ASCOM Device Hub instead. For autofocus, it suggests trying a step size of 500.
What is the "Automatic Position Recovery" feature for the SESTO SENSO 3 SC?
This is an optional safety feature. If enabled, the system detects if the focuser has been moved manually or accidentally. After a user-set delay (from 0 to 20 seconds), the motor will automatically move the focuser back to its last commanded position. It is well suited to public or educational observatories.
How do I set up temperature compensation?
You will need the optional external temperature probe connected to the SESTO SENSO 3 SC. In PLAY, open Temp comp and record at least 3 perfect-focus points with a temperature difference of 5°C. PLAY calculates the temperature coefficient; once enabled, compensation also applies through the ASCOM driver.
