  • iOptron AccuAlign Illuminated Dark-Field Polar Scope for SkyGuider Pro (3330-SGP)

The iOptron AccuAlign Illuminated Dark-Field Polar Scope (3330-SGP) is the polar scope fitted to the SkyGuider Pro #3550. It has about a 6° field of view, a fine engraved reticle with circles for Polaris (36' to 44') and Sigma Octantis (60' to 70'), and red LED illumination whose brightness you set from the mount. It carries iOptron's 1-year limited warranty.

    A Dual-Hemisphere Reticle with 36' to 70' Alignment Circles

The core of the AccuAlign scope is its precision-engraved reticle, designed for polar alignment in either hemisphere. The dial is marked for 12 hours with 10-minute ticks, so you can place the pole star at the position given for your location and time. For observers in the Northern Hemisphere, a set of concentric circles from 36' to 44' arcminutes helps you place Polaris perfectly, while a second set from 60' to 70' is included for aligning on Sigma Octantis in the Southern Hemisphere.

    Mount-Integrated Adjustable Red LED Illumination

The dark-field reticle is lit by a red LED. You set its brightness from the SkyGuider Pro itself with the Function Button and arrow buttons, or from the Set Eyepiece Light menu of the optional 8408 hand controller, so the dial is as bright as you need for your eyes and sky.

    A 6° Field for App-Assisted Polar Alignment

With a generous 6-degree field of view, the AccuAlign scope helps you find the pole star. For Quick Polar Alignment you use a smartphone app, like iOptron's Polar Scope utility, to determine the exact current position of Polaris. You then simply look through the focused eyepiece and use the mount's altitude and azimuth adjustment knobs to move Polaris to the corresponding position on the reticle. For a rough alignment you can simply put Polaris at the cross hairs; the misalignment is then about 40 arcminutes.

AccuAlign #3330-SGP vs. iPolar: Optical vs. Electronic Alignment

The SkyGuider Pro comes in two versions: #3550 with this AccuAlign polar scope, and #3550A with the iPolar electronic polar scope.

    • iOptron iPolar: An electronic polar scope that connects to a computer over USB and is used with iOptron's software.
    • AccuAlign #3330-SGP: Used by eye with the engraved reticle, together with the iOptron Polar Scope app or the 8408 hand controller to find the pole star position. No computer is needed.
  • How do I use the AccuAlign #3330-SGP to align my SkyGuider Pro?

The process is straightforward. First, use a polar scope app on your phone to find the current position of Polaris, which will be shown on a clock-face diagram. Then, look through the AccuAlign scope and use the mount's altitude and azimuth knobs to place the star Polaris in the exact same position on the scope's 12-hour reticle. Adjust the polar scope eyepiece to bring the reticle into focus.

Is the iOptron AccuAlign #3330-SGP compatible with other mounts?

The iOptron AccuAlign #3330-SGP is made for the iOptron SkyGuider Pro. Fit on other mounts is not documented, and iOptron sells separate polar scopes for other models.

What is the difference between this AccuAlign scope and the iPolar for the SkyGuider Pro?

The AccuAlign scope is a traditional, optical tool that you look through to manually place Polaris on an engraved reticle. The iPolar is an electronic polar scope that connects to a computer over USB; it is fitted to the #3550A version of the SkyGuider Pro instead of the AccuAlign. The AccuAlign needs no computer.

How do I adjust the brightness of the AccuAlign #3330-SGP reticle?

The reticle illumination is controlled directly from the SkyGuider Pro mount body. Press and hold the Function Button until the LED under the letter S blinks, release, then press and hold again until the LED beneath the polar scope symbol is on. Use the arrow buttons to adjust the brightness, then check that the correct hemisphere is still selected.

My view through the AccuAlign scope is blurry. How can I fix it?

There are two focus adjustments. First, adjust the polar scope eyepiece to bring the reticle into sharp focus. If the stars are out of focus, the objective lens may need adjustment, which is a more involved process; it is recommended to contact iOptron for instructions as this is factory-calibrated.

Can I use the AccuAlign #3330-SGP for alignment on Sigma Octantis in Australia?

Yes. The reticle in the AccuAlign #3330-SGP is designed for both hemispheres. It includes a specific set of concentric circles marked from 60' to 70' arcminutes, which are used to correctly position the star Sigma Octantis for precise polar alignment in the Southern Hemisphere.
