Purosol

Cleaning a multi-coated optic is a question of chemistry as much as technique. Household cleaners contain ammonia and alcohols that attack coatings, while a fluid formulated for optical surfaces lifts contamination without leaving residue or degrading the layers underneath. Purosol is a non-toxic optical cleaner designed for exactly this. David Astro carries Purosol products in Canada, held in stock for fast domestic shipping.

Before cleaning anything, it is worth asking whether it needs cleaning at all. Send us a photo and we will tell you honestly.

Cleaning Coated Optics Safely

The fluid matters, and so does everything around it — what you apply it with, in what order, and how often.

  • Coating-safe formulation: Free of ammonia and harsh solvents, so repeated use does not degrade multi-layer coatings the way household cleaners do.
  • No residue: A cleaner that dries without film is what prevents the streaking that makes people clean again, compounding the risk.
  • Applied to the tissue, not the optic: Fluid sprayed directly onto a lens can run into the cell and behind the element, where it is very difficult to remove.
  • Blower and brush first: Always remove loose particles before any contact, since wiping grit across a coating is what causes scratches.
  • Single-use tissue: A reused cloth carries the contamination from last time. Fresh lens tissue for each pass is safer on a coated optic.
  • Sensor and eyepiece use: Suitable for camera sensor windows, eyepieces and small optics as well as objectives, where dust matters more.

Why Choose David Astro for Purosol

We would rather you cleaned rarely and correctly than often and hopefully.

  • Honest about necessity: Most optics we are asked about do not need cleaning. Dust has negligible effect on images and every cleaning carries risk.
  • Procedure explained: Blower, then brush, then fluid on tissue — the order is what prevents damage, and we will walk through it.
  • Professional cleaning available: For a badly contaminated objective or a mirror, we can do it here rather than have you risk an expensive optic.
  • Genuine product: Supplied through proper channels, in Canadian stock.
  • Ships from Canada: No duties or brokerage fees for Canadian buyers.

Purosol in Canada — Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe on multi-coated optics?
It is formulated for coated optical surfaces and free of the ammonia and harsh solvents that degrade coatings. It is a very different product from household glass cleaner.
Can I spray it directly on the lens?
No. Apply it to the lens tissue and then to the optic. Fluid sprayed on the glass runs down into the cell and behind the element, where it can cause more trouble than the dirt did.
How often should I clean?
Rarely. Clean when there is something on the glass that will cause damage if left, not for appearance. Dust on an objective has almost no effect on image quality.
Can I use it on a camera sensor?
On the sensor window, with appropriate swabs. This is where dust genuinely matters, since it sits near the focal plane and casts sharp shadows in your images.

Unsure whether to clean?
