  • Askar SQA70 70mm f/4.8 Quintuplet APO

The Askar SQA70 is a quintuplet air-spaced Petzval astrograph featuring a 70mm aperture, a fast f/4.8 focal ratio, and a 336mm focal length. Its 5-element Quintuplet Petzval optical design includes 2 ED glass elements and supports a 44mm full-frame image circle. The 2.68kg optical tube is equipped with a 2.5" dual-speed focuser, a 360° rotator, and works at any connection distance from 37mm to 68mm.

Quintuplet Petzval Optics: A 5-Element Design with 2 ED Lenses

The SQA70 is built around a five-element, air-spaced Petzval optical system that functions as its own field flattener. It is a Petzval self-flattened structure, so no separate flattener is needed, and the SQA70 has great star performance, with excellent full-field illumination and MTF data.

To ensure high-contrast images free of false color, the optical train incorporates two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements. These lenses reduce chromatic aberration, the color fringing around bright stars.

    70mm Aperture & f/4.8 Speed: Capturing Wide-Field Targets at 336mm

With a focal length of 336mm, the Askar SQA70 provides an expansive field of view ideal for capturing large-scale celestial objects. On a full-frame sensor it covers about 6.1 x 4.1 degrees, enough for the North America and Pelican Nebulae together (NGC 7000 and IC 5070) or the full Andromeda Galaxy (M31).

The fast f/4.8 focal ratio allows the 70mm objective lens to gather light rapidly, enabling you to capture significant signal in shorter sub-exposures. That lets you collect more data during limited clear-sky windows.

    A 44mm Image Circle for Full-Frame Sensors

The SQA70 supports full-frame imaging with a 44mm image circle, large enough to cover a full-frame (36x24mm) sensor, and its full-field illumination is excellent.

The self-flattened design removes the need to calculate back focus: with a connection distance anywhere between 37mm and 68mm, you can shoot directly once the OTA is in focus.

Flexible 37mm-68mm Back Focus with 3 Included Adapters

The supported rear-end connection distance is 37mm to 68mm, with 55mm recommended. That range leaves room to plan filter drawers, off-axis guiders and different camera models.

The telescope comes with three adapters, all toothed and ribbed so they rotate by hand without slipping:

    • M54 Adapter: Packed separately.
    • M48 Adapter: Fitted to the OTA, with an M48×0.75 filter thread.
    • M42 Adapter: Packed separately.

    2.5" Rack-and-Pinion Focuser with 32mm Travel & 360° Rotator

The SQA70 features a 2.5" dual-speed rack-and-pinion focuser. The coarse handwheel allows quick adjustments, and the fine handwheel allows precise focusing. The drawtube provides 32mm of travel and is engraved with high-precision scales.

At the rear of the focuser is a 360° high-precision rotator with a precision scale, so you can adjust and save the rotation angle, and an edge-shaped locking screw for easy locking. The focuser is compatible with most motorized focusers on the market, and the manual marks the screw positions for an electric focusing bracket.

Mechanical Platform: A 2.68kg OTA with Integrated Rings and Hardware

The SQA70's mechanical design is focused on stability and utility. The optical tube assembly (OTA) weighs just 2.68kg, making it easy to handle and balance. It sits in an integrated pair of tube rings with a hollow middle to reduce weight, on a standard Vixen-style 290mm dovetail plate.

    Key usability features include:

    • Retractable Dew Shield: The dew shield, held by a locking screw, pulls out to an overall length of 372mm and pulls in to 332mm.
    • Accessory Mounting: Both sides of the tube rings have M4 and M6 threaded holes for a base, a dovetail plate or other accessories.
    • Multiple Finder Bases: The handle includes a slotted finder base, and two additional finder bases are located on the focuser body, for finders or other accessories.

    3.5kg Total Weight

With a total weight of 3.5kg including its tube rings and dovetail plate, the Askar SQA70 suits a portable imaging setup, and its shortest length is 332mm.

An Oxford cloth bag is included for carrying it to a dark-sky site.

  • Do I need to buy a separate field flattener for the Askar SQA70?

No. The Askar SQA70 uses a 5-element Quintuplet Petzval optical design, which is "self-flattening." It supports full-frame imaging with no additional flattener and no back focus calculation.

Can the Askar SQA70 be used with a full-frame camera?

Yes. The SQA70 is specifically designed to produce a 44mm image circle, which is large enough to cover a full-frame (36x24mm) sensor.

What kind of deep-sky objects are a good match for the Askar SQA70's 336mm focal length?

On a full-frame sensor the 336mm focal length covers about 6.1 x 4.1 degrees. That suits large targets such as the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), the North America Nebula (NGC 7000) and the Heart and Soul Nebulae (IC 1805 and IC 1848).

How do I attach an electronic focuser to the Askar SQA70?

The manual's steps: remove the thumb screw, remove the coarse adjustment knob with a 2mm wrench, fit the motor bracket with standard M4 screws without locking them, choose a 5 to 6mm flexible coupling, insert the EAF into the coupling, then lock the EAF mounting screws and finally the M4 fixing screws.

What is the purpose of the 360° rotator on the SQA70's focuser?

The 360° rotator allows you to change the orientation of your camera to frame your target without loosening the camera from the imaging train. Its precision scale lets you record the angle and return to it, which helps with mosaics and later sessions.

How do I use the different back focus distances between 37mm and 68mm?

With any connection distance between 37mm and 68mm you can shoot directly once the OTA is in focus; 55mm is recommended. Add or remove spacers between the rear adapter and the sensor to land in that range.

What are the included M42, M48, and M54 adapters used for?

The M42, M48 and M54 adapters can be used to mount various accessories. The M48 adapter comes fitted to the OTA and has an M48×0.75 filter thread; all three are toothed and ribbed so they turn by hand without slipping.

Can I attach filters to the Askar SQA70?

Yes. The included M48 adapter has an M48×0.75 filter thread for a 2-inch filter. Alternatively, you can place a filter drawer or filter wheel in your imaging train, provided the total light path remains within the 37mm to 68mm back focus range.

Will the Askar SQA70 work for imaging the Orion Nebula (M42) from my backyard?

Yes. At 336mm a full-frame sensor covers about 6.1 x 4.1 degrees, enough for M42 and much of the surrounding sword region. From a light-polluted backyard, using a dual-band or multi-band narrowband filter will help isolate the nebula's emission lines from the skyglow, and the fast f/4.8 optics will help capture the data quickly.

What does the "2x ED Elements" in the Askar SQA70's design do?

The two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements are specialized lenses that control chromatic aberration, or "color fringing." They help bring different wavelengths of light to a common focus, which reduces colored halos around bright stars.
