  • SVBONY SV501P 60mm Portable Refractor Telescope

The SVBONY SV501P 60mm Portable Refractor Telescope combines a 60mm multi-coated objective lens and a 400mm focal length into a portable f/6.7 optical package designed for beginners. This complete 2170g kit includes an aluminum alloy tripod, a 5x24 optical finderscope, a 45° correct-image diagonal, and a K20mm eyepiece for 20x magnification right out of the included backpack.

60mm f/6.7 Achromatic Optics: Bright Views for Beginners

The SV501P's 60mm aperture shows the Moon's craters, the rings of Saturn and the four Galilean moons orbiting Jupiter. The 400mm focal length gives an f/6.7 focal ratio and a wide field of view at low power, which simplifies finding objects for observers new to the night sky.

The objective lens uses a 2-element, 2-group design, and the optics are multi-coated. Like any doublet without ED glass, it will exhibit some chromatic aberration (false color) on very bright objects, a normal trait of this design.

Complete Viewing Kit: 45° Diagonal and K20mm Eyepiece

This telescope arrives as a complete kit with all the accessories needed for immediate observation. A key component is the included 45° correct-image prism diagonal, which provides an image that is both upright and correctly oriented left-to-right. This makes the SV501P equally useful for terrestrial viewing, such as birdwatching or observing distant landscapes, as it is for astronomy.

    • K20mm Eyepiece: The included 1.25" eyepiece provides a 20x magnification, suited to wide-field scans of the Milky Way or observing the entire lunar disc.
    • 5x24 Finderscope: The optical finderscope helps you locate and center targets before viewing them through the main telescope.
    • Standard 1.25" Focuser: The telescope uses a standard 1.25" focuser and diagonal, allowing you to expand your magnification options with standard 1.25" eyepieces.

2170g Grab-and-Go Kit with Tripod and Backpack

Total kit weight is 2170g, and the kit comes with a backpack. The 20mm-diameter aluminum alloy legs keep the tripod light for casual viewing.

Its compact size and low weight make it easy to take to a dark-sky site, on a camping trip, or simply move into the backyard for a quick session.

SVBONY SV501P 60mm vs. 70mm: Aperture and Portability

The SV501P is also available in a 70mm version, and choosing between them depends on your primary goal. The 60mm model is lighter, while the 70mm gathers more light.

    • SV501P 70mm (Advantage): With a larger aperture, the 70mm model resolves finer detail and produces brighter images. It has approximately 36% more light-gathering area than the 60mm, making it slightly better for viewing fainter star clusters.
    • SV501P 60mm (Advantage): This 60mm kit weighs 2170g against the 70mm kit's 2950g. Both have a 400mm focal length, so the same eyepiece gives the same magnification and field of view in either.
  • What can I realistically see with the SVBONY SV501P 60mm telescope?

The SVBONY SV501P suits bright celestial objects. You can see craters on the Moon, the four Galilean moons of Jupiter, the rings of Saturn, and the phases of Venus. In daytime, it shows distant landscapes and wildlife.

How will Saturn's rings appear with the SV501P's included K20mm eyepiece?

With the included K20mm eyepiece providing 20x magnification, Saturn's rings will be visible as a distinct feature separate from the planet itself. While you won't see the Cassini Division at this power, you will clearly identify the planet's iconic shape. Adding a higher-power eyepiece (sold separately) would make the rings even more prominent.

Is the SVBONY SV501P good for daytime bird watching?

Yes, it works for bird watching and other terrestrial viewing. The included 45° correct-image prism diagonal is the key feature for this, ensuring the image you see is both upright and correctly oriented left-to-right, which is essential for following moving objects on land.

Can I use different eyepieces with the SV501P telescope?

Yes. The telescope uses a standard 1.25" focuser and diagonal, so you can expand your collection with additional 1.25" eyepieces to achieve higher or lower magnifications. A 10mm eyepiece, for example, would provide 40x magnification (400mm / 10mm).

How difficult is the SVBONY SV501P to set up for a complete beginner?

The SV501P is designed for simplicity and quick, no-tool assembly. The main components attach easily, and the lightweight aluminum tripod is simple to handle. The setup is no-tool.

Can the SV501P resolve craters on the Moon like Copernicus?

Yes. You can identify major craters like Copernicus and Tycho, especially when viewing along the terminator (the line between the lit and dark portions of the Moon), where long shadows create high contrast and make surface features stand out.

What is the difference between the SV501P's 45° diagonal and a standard 90° star diagonal?

The 45° correct-image diagonal included with the SV501P provides an image that is upright and not reversed left-to-right, which suits terrestrial viewing. A standard 90° star diagonal provides an image that is upright but mirror-reversed, which is perfectly fine for astronomy (as there is no "up" in space) but can be confusing for daytime use.

Is the SVBONY SV501P suitable for astrophotography?

The SV501P is designed primarily for visual observation. While you could hold a smartphone up to the eyepiece for simple snapshots of the Moon, it is not designed for long-exposure astrophotography of faint objects. The alt-azimuth tripod does not track the rotation of the Earth, which is necessary for imaging deep-sky targets.

How do I align the 5x24 finderscope that comes with the SV501P?

First, during the daytime, point the main telescope at a distant, stationary object like a treetop or telephone pole and center it in the K20mm eyepiece. Then, look through the finderscope and adjust its small alignment screws until the crosshairs are also centered on the exact same object. Once aligned, the finder will accurately point to whatever you want to observe in the main telescope.

What is the benefit of the f/6.7 focal ratio on the SV501P?

The f/6.7 ratio comes from the short 400mm focal length, which gives low power and a wide view with the included eyepiece:

    • Wide Field of View: It makes it easier to fit large star clusters or portions of the Milky Way into a single view.
    • Easier Targeting: A wider view makes it much less challenging to find and center objects when you are first learning to navigate the sky.
