Launch Visual AssistantThe SVBONY SV550 122mm APO Refractor is built for astrophotography and visual observation. Its 122mm air-spaced triplet objective and 854mm focal length provide a versatile f/7 system, with an FPL-51 ED element to reduce false color. With a theoretical resolution of 1.15 arc seconds and a limiting stellar magnitude of 12.3, it suits both deep-sky targets and the Moon and planets.
At the heart of the SV550 is a 122mm air-spaced apochromatic triplet objective. It uses three lenses, including one ED (Extra-low Dispersion) element of FPL-51 glass, to bring colors closer to a common focus and reduce chromatic aberration, the "purple fringing" seen around bright stars.
The telescope has fully multi-coated (FMC) optics and a knife-edge baffled optical system, which raise light transmission and suppress stray light for a darker sky background.
The SV550 122's optical tube assembly has a net weight of 6450g and is constructed from CNC-machined aluminum for durability. It needs a capable equatorial mount for long-exposure imaging, especially after adding a camera, guidescope, and other accessories.
To support this, the telescope includes dual hinged tube rings and a 300mm Vixen dovetail plate. The long dovetail leaves room to slide the telescope forward or back to balance it. The rings have 26 screw holes and a handle mounting screw for accessories like a guide scope, an astronomy camera or a smart WiFi device.
The SV550 122 has a 2.5-inch CNC-machined rack-and-pinion focuser rated by SVBONY for a 5 kg load, with 87mm of drawtube travel.
A dual-speed mechanism with a 10:1 reduction ratio allows for both coarse and fine focus adjustments. This precision is essential for achieving critically sharp stars in astrophotography. A lock screw lets you secure the focuser position once sharp focus is achieved, and you should lock it when a heavy load is attached. The focuser also rotates, so you can frame your target on the camera sensor without rotating the optical tube in its rings.
The focuser terminates in a standard 2-inch visual back for use with diagonals and eyepieces. Unscrewing this adapter exposes a female M63x1 thread for the SVBONY SV209 field flattener or other M63x1 accessories.
The SV550 122 pairs with the SVBONY SV209 0.8x focal reducer/field flattener, which gives a faster, wider field. The camera sensor sits at the conventional 55mm from the flattener's thread.
The SV550 122 also works visually. Its limiting magnitude is 12.3. This opens up views of fainter globular clusters, planetary nebulae, and subtle details in distant galaxies.
The f/7 focal ratio suits both wide and close views. With a low-power, wide-field 2-inch eyepiece, you can frame large targets like the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) or the Pleiades (M45). At the same time, the 854mm focal length supports high-magnification viewing of the Moon and planets. Using a Barlow lens and high-power eyepieces, the telescope's 1.15 arc second resolution helps split close double stars and show Jupiter's cloud bands and the Cassini Division in steady air.
The SV550 122 is built for prime-focus astrophotography. A DSLR camera can be attached using a standard T-ring and the appropriate adapters to connect to the focuser or a field flattener. For more advanced imaging, a dedicated astronomy camera can be threaded to the flattener at the 55mm spacing.
The 854mm focal length suits medium-sized deep-sky objects such as the Whirlpool Galaxy (M51) or the Dumbbell Nebula (M27). The rotatable focuser helps you orient the camera.
The SV550 122 needs time to reach outdoor temperature. Allow at least 15 minutes of cooling to prevent internal tube currents from distorting the view. You can use this time to set up your mount and attach accessories. The retractable dew shield should be fully extended to minimize dew formation on the objective lens and block stray light.
For visual use, you will need to add a 2-inch star diagonal and eyepieces. For imaging, you will need a sturdy equatorial mount, a camera, and the necessary adapters. Before starting, ensure the telescope is securely balanced on the mount for smooth tracking. Always remember to never look at the Sun through the telescope without a proper, front-mounted solar filter.
The SV550 122mm gathers more light and resolves finer detail than its 80mm sibling.
With a net weight of 6450g, the SV550 122 OTA needs a sturdy mount. For long-exposure astrophotography, choose an equatorial mount rated comfortably above the OTA plus camera and guiding equipment.
The triplet with an FPL-51 ED element reduces chromatic aberration, so a bright star like Vega shows far less purple halo than in an achromatic refractor.
For larger sensors, yes. Field curvature softens stars at the edge of the frame, and a flattener or reducer/flattener corrects it. The SVBONY SV209 0.8x reducer/flattener is designed for this telescope.
Yes. For visual use, adding a quality Barlow lens will increase the magnification for detailed views of Jupiter's cloud bands, Saturn's rings, and Martian surface features. For imaging, a Barlow and a planetary camera raise the image scale.
Yes. With a low-power, wide-field 2-inch eyepiece, you can frame large objects like the Orion Nebula (M42) and the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) . The four Trapezium stars in M42's core are an easy split at moderate power.
The 1.15 arc second resolution is the telescope's theoretical ability to distinguish between two very closely spaced objects, like the two stars in a tight double star system. Under good seeing conditions, this helps split close double stars and shows fine lunar and planetary detail.
The SV550 122mm is an optical tube assembly (OTA) only. To get started, you will need at a minimum:
You will need a T-ring for your camera mount and a 2-inch T-adapter to connect it to the telescope's focuser. With larger sensors, SVBONY's SV209 threads to the focuser's M63x1 port.
The 2.5-inch focuser is rated for a 5 kg load and has a lock for heavy loads. The wide drawtube also takes M63x1 accessories.
The optical tube weighs 6450g, and SVBONY includes a carrying case for trips to dark-sky sites. However, you must also account for the weight and size of the required equatorial mount.
