Clamshell Design for Solid, Repeatable Mounting

The mount is machined from aluminum and anodized in a durable satin finish that perfectly matches the focuser and dew shield of modern Tele Vue telescopes. Its two-piece clamshell design bolts together around the optical tube, creating a rigid, flexure-free connection. Unlike hinged rings, this solid-body construction ensures the telescope returns to the same position every time, maintaining mechanical alignment with your mount.

Effortless Balance with the Bat-Handle Lock

A key feature is the large, tool-free "bat-handle" locking screw. This mechanism allows you to make precise fore-and-aft balance adjustments without any extra tools. When you switch from a lightweight Plössl to a heavy Ethos eyepiece, a simple twist of the handle is all it takes to loosen the ring's grip, slide the telescope tube to its new balance point, and lock it down securely. This workflow benefit means less time fumbling in the dark and more time observing.

Protective Felt-Lined Interior

The inside surface of the ring is lined with a thin, dense layer of felt. This lining serves two critical functions. First, it protects your telescope's tube from scratches and scuffs as you make balance adjustments. Second, it provides just the right amount of friction, allowing the telescope to slide smoothly when the bat-handle is loosened without slipping uncontrollably.

Integrated Accessory Channels for Finderscopes

The top of the ring features two machined channels designed to accept Tele Vue's range of finder accessories. This provides a secure, low-profile attachment point for the Starbeam, Sol-Searcher, or Piggy-Cam. By integrating the finder mount directly into the main ring, Tele Vue eliminates the need for additional brackets, reducing weight and potential sources of flexure.

Versatile Mount Connection Options

The flat base of the ring mount is drilled with three 1/4"-20 threaded holes. This pattern allows for direct, secure attachment to Tele Vue's Gibraltar and Tele-Pod mounts, forming a cohesive, manufacturer-designed system. For observers using other mounts, these standard attachment points provide broad compatibility with Vixen or Losmandy style dovetail plates, making it a versatile choice for any setup.

A Note on Hingeless Design

One trade-off with this clamshell design is the lack of a hinge. To mount the telescope, you must fully separate the two halves of the ring. While this creates a more solid and compact connection that fits inside Tele-Pod yokes, it is a slightly more involved process than with a simple hinged ring. This is a deliberate engineering choice that prioritizes rigidity and system compatibility over the convenience of a quick-release hinge.

Choosing the Right Tele Vue Mounting System

Tele Vue offers single rings for smaller scopes and dual ring sets for larger instruments. The choice depends on your telescope and application.

• 3" Ring Mount (This Product): Ideal for the TV-76, TV-85, and Pronto. Its single-ring design is lightweight and perfectly suited for the smaller optical tubes, providing secure mounting and easy balancing for visual use on alt-azimuth mounts like the Tele-Pod.
• 4" and 5" Ring Mount Sets: Designed for larger telescopes like the NP101 and NP127is. These sets use two rings connected by plates for increased stability, which is essential for preventing flexure during long-exposure astrophotography and for handling the greater weight of the larger instruments.
