SharpStar in Canada — Frequently Asked Questions
- Are very fast astrographs hard to use?
- They are less forgiving. Collimation tolerance and back-focus tolerance both tighten as focal ratio drops, so a system that is fine at f/6 needs real care at f/3. The reward is dramatically shorter integration times.
- Do I need the matched reducer?
- For imaging with anything larger than a small sensor, yes. The refractors have curved focal planes without one, and using a corrector designed for a different tube gives worse results than none at all.
- Refractor or hyperbolic Newtonian?
- Refractor for simplicity, portability and no collimation. Newtonian for far more aperture and speed at the same cost, accepting collimation as routine maintenance.
- Is warranty handled in Canada?
