Shelyak
Spectroscopy is the branch of amateur astronomy where a modest telescope still contributes real science. A spectrum reveals what a star is made of, how fast it is moving, and whether something has changed — measurements that are as valuable from a backyard as from a mountaintop. Shelyak Instruments builds the spectrographs that make this accessible. David Astro carries Shelyak products in Canada, in stock, with fast shipping across Canada and worldwide.
Resolution, target brightness and telescope aperture determine which instrument suits you. Tell us what you want to measure and we will match it.

Spectrographs trade resolution against the faintness of the targets they can reach. Choosing well means knowing which side of that trade your programme sits on.
- Low-resolution spectrographs: Capture a broad spectrum from relatively faint targets, suitable for classifying stars, observing novae and studying emission-line objects.
- High-resolution spectrographs: Resolve fine line detail and small wavelength shifts for radial velocity and line profile work, requiring brighter targets and longer exposures.
- Echelle designs: Capture a wide wavelength range at high resolution simultaneously by stacking spectral orders, at higher cost and complexity.
- Calibration modules: Reference lamps that provide known wavelength lines, without which a spectrum cannot be accurately calibrated.
- Guiding provision: Keeping a star on a narrow slit for minutes requires integrated guiding, and this is a core part of the instrument rather than an add-on.
- Transmission gratings: Simple grating filters that thread into an eyepiece barrel, the least expensive way to record a first spectrum.
Why Choose David Astro for Shelyak
Spectroscopy has a steeper learning curve than imaging, and the equipment choice should reflect where you are starting.
- Programme-based recommendation: We ask what you want to measure, because a radial velocity programme and a nova monitoring programme need very different resolutions.
- Realistic aperture guidance: Spectroscopy spreads a star's light across a detector, so target brightness and aperture matter more than in imaging. We set expectations honestly.
- Starting point suggested: For a first spectrum we will often suggest a transmission grating before a slit spectrograph, since it teaches the workflow at a fraction of the cost.
- Authorized dealer: Full manufacturer warranty with support handled in Canada.
- Ships from Canada: No duties or brokerage fees for Canadian buyers.
Shelyak in Canada — Frequently Asked Questions
- What aperture do I need for spectroscopy?
- More than for imaging the same object, because the light is spread across a spectrum. Low-resolution work on bright stars is achievable with modest apertures; high resolution needs both aperture and bright targets.
- Can amateurs contribute real data?
- Yes, substantially. Amateur spectra of novae, symbiotic stars and Be stars feed into professional monitoring programmes, because professionals cannot cover every object every night.
- Where should I start?
- A transmission grating that threads into an eyepiece barrel records a recognizable spectrum for very little money and teaches the calibration workflow, which is the hard part.
- Do I need a calibration lamp?
- For quantitative work, yes. Without reference lines of known wavelength you cannot calibrate the spectrum accurately, which limits it to qualitative comparison.
