Solar Accessories
Solar observing has its own accessory requirements, most of them safety-related. An unfiltered finder pointed at the Sun is a hazard, a filter that can be lifted by wind is a serious risk, and etalon tuning and blocking filter handling both require the right supporting hardware. David Astro carries solar accessories in Canada, stocked in Canada and shipped worldwide.
If any part of your solar setup is improvised, tell us about it. This is the one area where we would rather over-check than assume.

View full detailsSupporting Hardware for Solar Observing
These items make solar observation safer, easier to aim and more comfortable in daylight.
- Solar finders: Pinhole or shadow-projection finders that let you aim without looking through anything. An unfiltered optical finder pointed at the Sun is genuinely dangerous.
- Filter retention hardware: Straps and secure cells that prevent a full-aperture filter being lifted off by wind, which is a real failure mode with serious consequences.
- Blocking filters and diagonals: Eyepiece-end components for hydrogen-alpha systems, sized to the field you intend to view or image.
- Tuning aids: Adjusters and controls for etalon tuning, letting you shift between optimal disc and limb views during a session.
- Shade and observing hoods: Daylight makes screens and eyepieces hard to see. A hood or shade materially improves what you can detect.
- Aperture stops: Off-axis stops for large telescopes, reducing heat load and often improving the image in turbulent daytime seeing.
Why Choose David Astro for Solar Accessories
We check solar setups more carefully than anything else we sell, for obvious reasons.
- Safety verified rather than assumed: We confirm that filters are full-aperture and front-mounted, and that finders are capped or properly filtered.
- Retention emphasized: A filter that fits but is not secured is a hazard on a windy day, and we will recommend retention hardware with any full-aperture filter.
- Genuine components only: As an authorized dealer we supply manufacturer product, which matters in a category where counterfeits exist.
- Compatibility checked: Blocking filters and tuning hardware are system-specific, and we confirm the match before shipping.
- Ships from Canada: No duties or brokerage fees for Canadian buyers.
Solar Accessories in Canada — Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I aim at the Sun safely?
- With a solar finder that projects a shadow or a pinhole image, or by capping the finder entirely and using the telescope's own shadow to aim. Never look through an unfiltered finder.
- Does my solar filter need a strap?
- Any full-aperture filter that could be lifted by wind should be secured. A filter blown off while someone is at the eyepiece is a genuinely serious event.
- Should I stop down a large telescope for solar work?
- Often yes. An off-axis aperture stop reduces heat load and frequently improves the image, since daytime seeing rarely supports full aperture resolution.
- Can I improvise solar equipment?
- No. This is the one area where improvisation risks permanent eye injury. Tell us what you have and we will confirm whether it is safe before you use it.
