What kind of camera is best for the Celestron RASA 6"?
The design is optimized for sensors up to 16mm diagonal and still performs well up to 22mm, with reduced corner illumination. Cylindrical cameras under 75mm outer diameter block the least aperture. The camera adapter has M42 threads and needs 17.5mm backfocus from its top flat surface. DSLR cameras are not compatible.
Can the RASA 6" be used for visual observing with an eyepiece?
No. The Rowe-Ackermann Schmidt Astrograph is a dedicated imaging instrument. The camera is placed at the prime focus at the front of the telescope, and there is no provision for attaching an eyepiece or star diagonal for visual use.
How well does the Advanced VX mount handle the RASA 6" for imaging?
The optical tube weighs 8.4 lbs and the Advanced VX carries a 30 lb instrument load. It is a rigid, stable platform even when loaded with accessories like a StarSense Autoguider, dew prevention or a focus motor.
Do I need an autoguider with the RASA 6" system?
Often not. The f/2.2 focal ratio allows much shorter sub-exposures, so you will not need an autoguider in many instances. For long sub-exposures the Advanced VX has an autoguide port, and the Celestron StarSense Autoguider is the suggested match.
How does the integrated filter drawer work on the RASA 6"?
The filter drawer is part of the camera adapter assembly and sits in the light path before the camera sensor. It accepts 2" and 1.25" filters. The telescope includes a 2" clear filter (optical window) that should remain in place when not using another filter to maintain the system's optical performance. To use an imaging filter, you simply swap it with the clear filter.
What is the difference between the 16mm image circle and the 22mm usable field on the RASA 6"?
The 16mm image circle is the area the optics are optimized for. Across the 22mm usable field there is only minimal performance loss at the edge, with reduced field illumination in the corners.
How portable is the complete Advanced VX RASA 6" kit?
The system is designed for portability. The total kit weight is 55.4 lbs and it disassembles into four main components: the optical tube (8.4 lbs), the mount head (17 lbs), the tripod (18 lbs), and one 12 lb counterweight.
What power supply do I need for the Advanced VX RASA 6"?
The Advanced VX mount needs 12V DC, 3.5A (tip positive), for example from a car's cigarette lighter outlet or a portable power supply. The fan runs from the included battery pack (8 AA batteries, not included) or from a 12V DC source supplying at least 100mA through a 5.5mm/2.1mm tip-positive plug.
