  • Celestron CGX Equatorial 1100 SCT

The Celestron CGX Equatorial 1100 Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope combines a 279.4mm (11") StarBright XLT optical tube with the CGX equatorial mount and its 55 lb instrument capacity. With the tube weighing only 27.5 lbs, it is still portable enough to take to dark skies, and it has 89% more light gathering power than an 8" telescope and more than 40% more than the 9.25". The 2800mm focal length gives a Dawes limit of 0.42 arc seconds, 1593 times the light gathering power of the eye and a limiting stellar magnitude of 14.7.

    11" Schmidt-Cassegrain Optics: 0.42 Arc-Second Resolution with StarBright XLT

The 11" aluminum optical tube is 24 inches long and works at f/10 with a 2800mm focal length. The Rayleigh limit is 0.5 arc seconds and the Dawes limit 0.42 arc seconds. The focus knob moves the primary mirror and takes many turns from close focus to infinity, and the manual says to allow 45 minutes to reach thermal equilibrium after a large temperature change.

Celestron's proprietary StarBright XLT optical coatings are applied to the corrector lens and mirrors, visibly increasing light transmission and contrast. The system combines enhanced multi-layer mirror coatings, multi-layer anti-reflective coatings and a corrector of water white glass, giving brighter deep space images and shorter exposure times.

CGX Mount Design: A 55 lb Capacity Imaging Platform

Celestron designed the CGX, successor to its CGEM line, with a lower profile EQ head, which provides a more compact and therefore more stable setup, a better drive system, home and limit optical sensors for remote operation, easier polar alignment adjustments and better cable management. It carries a 55 lb instrument load on a 19.2 lb tripod with 2" steel legs.

    • Dual Dovetail Saddle: The saddle plate accommodates both CGE and CG-5 style dovetails; the 11" tube comes on a CGE dovetail bar.
    • Internal Cabling: The CGX uses internal cabling, with 2 AUX ports, an autoguide port and a USB port.

Drive, Sensors and Periodic Error Correction

DC servo motors slew at up to 4° per second. Internal switches take the mount to its home position at power-on, software limit sensors stop it near the end of its range, and a mechanical hard stop on each axis helps prevent the telescope striking the mount or tripod. The R.A. limit lets you track 20° past the meridian.

The mount has Periodic Error Correction and an anti-backlash setting in the hand control.

NexStar+ and CPWI Control: 40,000+ Objects from Handset or PC

The NexStar+ hand control holds over 40,000 objects and offers 2-Star, 1-Star, Solar System, Last and Quick Align. Its All-Star Polar Alignment polar aligns the mount on a convenient bright star without Polaris or a polar axis finder. The hand control's USB port handles firmware updates and ASCOM control.

For a more advanced experience, connect the mount directly to your PC via its separate USB port and use the included Celestron PWI (CPWI) Telescope Control Software. Starry Night Special Edition and the SkyPortal app (with the optional SkyPortal WiFi module) are also included.

    Astroimaging: f/10 and f/2 Fastar

The CGX 1100 is especially at home as a solid platform for long exposure photography, and the mount has a dedicated autoguide port.

The tube is Fastar compatible: the secondary mirror can be removed and replaced with a lens assembly sold separately by third-party manufacturers, so a camera works at f/2. Exposures are 25 times shorter than at f/10.

    Solar Warning

Never look directly at the Sun with the naked eye or with an optic (unless you have the proper solar filter). Permanent and irreversible eye damage may result. Never use your optic to project an image of the Sun onto any surface. Internal heat build-up can damage the optic and any accessories attached to it. Never leave your optic unsupervised. Make sure an adult who is familiar with the correct operating procedures is with your optic at all times, especially when children are present.

  • Can I control the Celestron CGX 1100 with my laptop?

Yes. The CGX 1100 includes Celestron's CPWI Telescope Control Software. By connecting the mount's USB 2.0 port to your PC, you can use CPWI's graphical interface to align the mount and slew to any object in its planetarium display. For ASCOM or third-party software, connect to the hand control's mini USB port.

Is the Celestron CGX 1100 portable enough for dark sky sites?

The total kit weight is 123.7 lbs. The parts are the 27.5 lb optical tube, 44 lb mount head, 19.2 lb tripod and three 11 lb counterweights, and the tube is still portable enough to take to dark skies.

What is the benefit of the CGX mount's dual saddle plate?

The dual saddle plate accepts both the wider CGE-style dovetail bar (included with the 11" OTA) and the narrower CG-5 (Vixen-style) dovetail.

How do I power the Celestron CGX 1100 in the field?

The mount requires a 12V DC power source capable of supplying at least 4 amps. It runs from the supplied car battery adapter on a 12V source delivering at least 4 amps, or from an optional AC adapter with a threaded barrel connector.

What does the All-Star Polar Alignment feature on the CGX 1100 do?

Celestron's All-Star Polar Alignment is a software-assisted routine built into the NexStar+ hand control. After a Two Star, One Star or Solar System Align, it lets you polar align on a convenient bright star with the altitude and azimuth adjustments, without Polaris or a polar axis finder.

Does the Celestron CGX 1100 require collimation?

Yes, like all Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes, the CGX 1100 may require occasional collimation (alignment of the optics) to deliver the sharpest images. This is done by making small adjustments to the three screws on the front of the secondary mirror housing. The telescope is collimated at the factory; the manual says it may need re-collimating after rough transport or large temperature changes.

What is the cool-down time for an 11" SCT like this one?

The manual says to allow 45 minutes for the telescope to reach thermal equilibrium if you move it between large temperature extremes, such as from a heated house into the cold night air.
