  • Celestron EdgeHD 8" OTA - CGE Dovetail

The Celestron EdgeHD 8" OTA combines a 203.2mm (8") aperture with a 2032mm focal length in an aplanatic, flat-field optical system designed for modern astroimaging. This optical tube's f/10 focal ratio gives a Dawes resolution of 0.57 arc seconds, 843x the light gathering power of the human eye and a limiting stellar magnitude of 14. The EdgeHD 8" delivers aberration-free stars across its 42mm image circle, weighs only 14 lbs, and is Fastar-compatible for conversion to an ultra-fast f/2 system.

    EdgeHD Optics: A 42mm Flat-Field Astrograph

The core of the EdgeHD 8" is its aplanatic, flat-field Schmidt-Cassegrain optical system, which produces pinpoint stars across a 42mm image circle. Unlike standard SCTs that project sharp stars onto a curved focal plane, the EdgeHD design delivers a focal plane more than three times flatter, so stars stay sharp to the edge of a flat camera sensor. Celestron optimized the 8" for the central 28mm of its 42mm circle, the size of an APS-C chip.

Superior edge performance not only creates rounder stars but improves resolution and limiting magnitude compared with telescopes of equal aperture.

Imaging at f/10, with a 0.7x Reducer, and at f/2

EdgeHD is a flexible imaging platform.

    • Native f/10: At its native 2032mm focal length, the OTA gives the image scale to capture the smallest deep-sky objects.
    • Reduced f/7: With the optional EdgeHD 800 0.7x Focal Reducer (#94242), you can increase your field of view without sacrificing optical performance.
    • Ultra-Fast f/2: All EdgeHD tubes are Fastar-compatible. The secondary mirror can be removed and replaced with a third-party lens accessory for ultra-fast f/2 wide-field imaging.

Mirror Clutches and Vents in a 14 lb Tube

To support the demands of long-exposure astrophotography, Celestron redesigned the EdgeHD tube. Flexible tension clutches hold the primary mirror in place after focusing, significantly reducing the potential for image shift that can compromise an exposure. Flexible rods hold the mirror without putting force or pressure on the mirror assembly.

Cooling vents on the rear cell let hot air out from behind the primary mirror, and each has an integrated 50-mesh filter that keeps dust out.

843x Light Gathering and 0.57" Resolution

With a light gathering power 843 times that of the human eye, the EdgeHD 8" reaches a limiting stellar magnitude of 14, and StarBright XLT coatings on every surface give maximum light throughput across the visual and photographic spectrum.

Rayleigh resolution is 0.69 arc seconds and Dawes resolution 0.57 arc seconds. Every EdgeHD passes a final acceptance test with a camera and an artificial star before it ships.

Visual Use: 51x Magnification with the Included 40mm Eyepiece

While designed as an astrograph, the EdgeHD 8" is also a superb visual instrument. The package includes a 1.25" star diagonal, a 9x50 finderscope, and a 40mm eyepiece that gives 51x.

The telescope's highest useful magnification is 480x, and the lowest useful magnification is 29x.

  • What is the main advantage of the Celestron EdgeHD 8" over a standard 8" SCT for imaging?

The primary advantage is its flat-field, coma-free optical design. A standard SCT has a curved focal plane, which causes stars at the edges of an imaging sensor to appear out of focus. The EdgeHD 8" corrects for this, producing pinpoint stars across its entire 42mm image circle,

Can I use the Celestron EdgeHD 8" for high-resolution planetary imaging?

Yes. A Barlow such as Celestron's 2x or 3x X-Cel LX lets imagers reach f/22 to f/32 for ultra-high-resolution lunar and planetary imaging, and every EdgeHD should show subtle shadings in Jupiter's belts and the Cassini Division in Saturn's rings.

How do I convert the EdgeHD 8" to an f/2 imaging system?

All EdgeHD tubes are Fastar compatible: the secondary mirror can be removed and replaced with a third-party lens accessory, sold separately, for ultra-fast f/2 wide-field imaging with a camera at the front of the tube.

What camera sensor size is the EdgeHD 8" optimized for?

The 8" covers a 42mm image circle, and Celestron optimized it for the central 28mm, the size of an APS-C chip. With an APS-C camera, relative illumination falls to 84% at the extreme corners.

Is the 14 lb weight of the EdgeHD 8" manageable for a portable mount?

The tube weighs 14 lbs (6.35 kg) and is 432mm (17") long. Celestron sells EdgeHD 8" kits on its CGEM II, CGX and Evolution mounts.

What is the purpose of the mirror clutches on the EdgeHD 8"?

They hold the primary mirror in place and reduce image shift during long exposures. Focus first, then turn the two mirror lock knobs clockwise until tight; loosen them before you turn the focus knob again.

What mount do I need for the Celestron EdgeHD 8" OTA?

The tube weighs 14 lbs and comes on a CGE dovetail bar, which fits CGE saddles such as the dual saddles on Celestron's CGEM II and CGX mounts.

What is the correct back focus for the EdgeHD 8" when imaging?

The EdgeHD 800 forms its best images 133.35mm (5.25") behind its standard 2"-24 tpi rear thread, within about ±0.5mm. Celestron's T-adapter for the 8" places a camera at that distance.
