Sky-Watcher SynScan GPS Module
The Sky-Watcher SynScan GPS Module plugs into the multi-purpose port of a SynScan hand control and acquires accurate local coordinates and local time from the GPS satellites. It helps improve the accuracy of the mount alignment and the polar alignment.
How It Works During Initialization
Plug the module into the multi-purpose port (the 6-pin RJ-12 port) at the bottom center of the SynScan hand control, place it on a horizontal surface and turn on the mount. When the hand control detects the module, it asks for your local time zone and whether to use Daylight Saving Time, then displays "GPS fixing..." while the module locks onto the satellites. Once it has a fix, the hand control continues the initialization.
GPS information: the UTILITY FUNCTION \ GPS menu shows local latitude, longitude, elevation, date, time zone, local time, UT, local sidereal time and magnetic declination.
Fix quality: the same screen shows the quality of the GPS fix and the number of satellites in view and fixed.
A More Accurate Foundation for GoTo Alignment
Alignment uses your location and time. Acquiring them with the GPS module helps improve the accuracy of the mount alignment and the polar alignment.
How do I use the Sky-Watcher SynScan GPS Module?
Plug it into the multi-purpose port on the SynScan hand control, place it on a horizontal surface and turn on the mount. The hand control asks for your time zone and Daylight Saving Time setting, displays "GPS fixing..." and continues the initialization once the module has a fix.
Will the SynScan GPS Module work with my EQ6-R Pro mount?
It works with Sky-Watcher mounts that use a SynScan hand control, including the EQ6-R. It plugs into the hand control's multi-purpose port.
Does the SynScan GPS Module require its own batteries?
No. It is powered by the mount through the hand control and needs no separate power.
What data does the SynScan GPS Module provide to the hand controller?
The hand control's GPS information screen lists local latitude, longitude, elevation, date, UT, local time, time zone, local sidereal time, magnetic declination, fix quality and the number of satellites in view and fixed.
I travel to different imaging sites with my HEQ5. Is the SynScan GPS Module a useful accessory?
Yes. At each new site it acquires the local coordinates and local time, so you do not enter them by hand.
