  • Tele Vue Delos 24mm 72° Eyepiece - 2"

The Tele Vue Delos 24mm 72° Eyepiece delivers its expansive 72° apparent field with a generous 22mm of eye relief, in a 2" barrel around a 29.6mm field stop. Drawing on Tele Vue's Ethos design experience, the Delos keeps size and weight down while achieving sharpness, linearity (freedom from pincushion distortion) and ghost suppression over the entire field for any speed (f/#) telescope. This 24mm model weighs 1.20 lb (544 g) and suits observers who want a wide view with room for eyeglasses.

The Delos 24mm: A 72° Field with 22mm of Eye Relief

Every Delos has a 72° apparent field. The Delos instruction sheet gives 20mm of eye relief for the 3.5mm to 17.3mm models; the 24mm, added later, has 22mm (Tele Vue chart). The 24mm is a low-to-medium power eyepiece for framing large deep-sky objects.

In a long focal length Schmidt-Cassegrain, this eyepiece can frame the entirety of the Orion Nebula (M42), while in a wide-field refractor, it frames large open clusters like the Pleiades (M45).

True Field of View from a 29.6mm Field Stop

An eyepiece's true field of view (how much actual sky you see) is determined by its field stop diameter and the telescope's focal length, not just its apparent field. The Delos 24mm features a 29.6mm field stop, larger than the 27mm maximum for a 1¼" eyepiece, which is why the 24mm Delos needs a 2" barrel. You can calculate the true field for your telescope using this formula: True Field = (Eyepiece Field Stop ÷ Telescope Focal Length) x 57.3.

For example, in a telescope with a 2000mm focal length, the Delos 24mm yields a true field of 0.85 degrees: (29.6mm / 2000mm) x 57.3. This is wide enough to frame the full disk of the Moon with room to spare, or to fit the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) and its satellite galaxies M32 and M110 in a single view with shorter focal length instruments.

Managing 22mm of Eye Relief with the Locking Eyeguard

With 22mm of eye relief, the Delos 24mm leaves room for eyeglasses; at least 15mm to 20mm is suggested for eyeglass wearers. Tele Vue's adjustable, locking eyeguard housing sets your eye at the right height, since an eye too far in or out causes edge darkening and field loss. By grasping the upper and lower grip rings and twisting, you can slide the housing up or down to find the height where you just see the full 72° field.

    • Setting Your Position: Without glasses, start with the eyeguard fully extended and slide it down until the field edge just becomes visible. Green indicator lines on the inner barrel help you remember your preferred setting.
    • Locking Mechanism: Once you find the ideal height, you can lock it in place by twisting the lower grip ring to the right. Tele Vue adds that the eyeguard minimizes extraneous outside light.
    • DIOPTRX™ Compatibility: The chart marks the Delos 24mm Dioptrx ready. A DIOPTRX is always completely aligned to the eyepiece optics, unlike eyeglasses, and can be rotated to match your astigmatic axis.

Delos 24mm vs. Panoptic 24mm: Eye Relief vs. Barrel Size

While both eyepieces offer the same 24mm focal length, they serve different priorities. The 24mm Panoptic uses a 1.25" barrel, making it compatible with a wider range of focusers and diagonals without requiring a 2" setup.

The Delos 24mm, however, uses a 2" barrel. From Tele Vue's chart:

    • Wider Apparent Field: The Delos presents a 72° apparent field of view, compared to the Panoptic's 68°.
    • Larger True Field: Its 29.6mm field stop is larger than the 27.0mm field stop in the Panoptic, allowing you to see a slightly larger patch of sky at the same magnification.
    • Eye Relief: The Delos offers a full 22mm of eye relief, a substantial 7mm more than the Panoptic's 15mm. The chart also marks the 24mm Panoptic Y* for Dioptrx (adapter required) and the Delos Y.

System Integration: Performance with Paracorr, Powermates, and Filters

The Delos manual lists these Tele Vue accessories:

    • Fast Reflectors: When used in a fast Newtonian or Dobsonian (f/5 or faster), the Paracorr Type-2 eliminates coma, the effect that makes off-centre stars look like little comets; scopes faster than f/5.0 see the greatest results. It has a 1.15x magnification factor.
    • Higher Magnification: Choose a long focal length eyepiece with comfortable eye relief and add a Barlow or Powermate (2x to 5x) to increase power. A 2x Powermate, for example, makes it act as a 12mm eyepiece.
    • Nebula Filters: The eyepiece accepts Tele Vue's BandMate filters. The OIII enhances planetary nebulae and supernova remnants such as the Veil, and the Nebustar is a general-purpose nebula filter.

Build, Weight, and Care for the 544g Delos 24mm

The Delos 24mm is a substantial eyepiece, weighing 1.20 lb (544 g). Ensure your focuser and diagonal can securely support it, and be prepared to rebalance your telescope when switching to or from lighter 1.25" eyepieces.

Tele Vue's warning: to avoid getting dust and dirt into the eyepiece, do not unscrew the chrome barrel. Use the included dust caps when the eyepiece is not in use.

  • Why is the Tele Vue Delos 24mm a 2-inch eyepiece while other Delos models are 1.25-inch?

Its 29.6mm field stop is larger than the 27mm maximum for a 1¼" eyepiece (46mm for 2"). A 24mm focal length with a 72° field needs that field stop, so the 24mm Delos is a 2" model only.

How does the Delos 24mm perform in a fast f/4.5 Dobsonian?

In a fast Dobsonian, the Tele Vue Delos 24mm works well; Tele Vue's Paracorr Type-2 is the companion for fast mirrors. The Paracorr will correct the coma inherent in fast parabolic mirrors, so stars stay sharp toward the edge of the 72° field. The eyepiece will produce a bright 5.3mm exit pupil, good for sweeping for faint galaxies and viewing large nebulae.

Can I use the Tele Vue Delos 24mm for planetary viewing?

It is mainly a deep-sky eyepiece. In long focal length telescopes such as SCTs it gives a moderate power for a first look at a planet; for planetary detail, pair it with a Tele Vue Barlow or Powermate or use a shorter Delos.

I wear glasses for astigmatism. Is the Delos 24mm a good choice?

Yes. The 22mm of eye relief is above the 15mm to 20mm suggested for eyeglass wearers. The eyepiece is also compatible with Tele Vue's DIOPTRX astigmatism correctors, which replace the need for glasses at the eyepiece and are more likely to give a sharper, higher-contrast image than eyeglasses.

What is the exit pupil of the Delos 24mm with my f/10 SCT?

The exit pupil is calculated by dividing the eyepiece focal length by the telescope's focal ratio. For the Delos 24mm in an f/10 telescope, the exit pupil would be 2.4mm (24mm / 10). That suits galaxies and globular clusters (Tele Vue chart: 2.4mm at f/10).

How do I adjust the eyeguard on the Tele Vue Delos 24mm?

The eyeguard has a locking mechanism. To adjust it, grasp the upper rubber grip with one hand and the lower grip ring with the other. Twist the lower ring to the left to loosen it. You can then slide the eyeguard up or down. Once you find your ideal position, twist the lower ring to the right to lock it in place.

Is the Delos 24mm better than the Panoptic 24mm?

"Better" depends on your needs. The Delos 24mm offers a wider apparent field (72° vs 68°), a larger true field, and significantly more eye relief (22mm vs 15mm), However, the Panoptic 24mm uses a 1.25" barrel, making it lighter and more compatible with smaller telescopes. If your setup takes a 2" eyepiece and you value eye relief, the Delos fits that need.

What's the best way to build an eyepiece set around the Delos 24mm?

Build a set by choosing eyepieces with field stops that decrease in uniform increments. The Delos 24mm has a 29.6mm field stop. A good next step for higher power would be an eyepiece with a field stop around half that size (approx. 15mm), such as the Tele Vue Delos 12mm. This approach ensures you are getting meaningfully different true fields of view with each eyepiece.

Will the Delos 24mm eyepiece show me more of the sky than a 31mm Nagler?

No. The true field of view is limited by the field stop and telescope focal length. The 31mm Nagler has a 42mm field stop, while the Delos 24mm has a 29.6mm field stop. In the same telescope, the 31mm Nagler will show a significantly wider true field of view. The Delos 24mm will provide higher magnification.

Can I use the Tele Vue Delos 24mm for smartphone astrophotography?

Yes. The Delos 24mm is compatible with Tele Vue's FoneMate smartphone adapter. The FoneMate clamps to compatible Tele Vue eyepieces for still, video or timelapse images.
