Tele Vue Equalizer HiHat Adapter - 2" - 1.25"

Engineered Mass for Seamless Transitions

At the heart of the Equalizer is its 12-ounce solid bronze body. This specific mass is no accident; it is engineered to approximate the weight of Tele Vue's larger 2-inch eyepieces. When you swap a heavy 2-inch Nagler or Panoptic for a small 1.25-inch Plössl housed in the Equalizer, the change in the telescope's center of gravity is minimal. This prevents the sudden tube drift that can throw your target out of the field of view, a critical benefit for Dobsonian users and anyone with a carefully balanced equatorial mount.

Secure, Non-Marring Brass Clamp Ring

To protect your investment in quality eyepieces, the Equalizer uses a soft brass clamp ring instead of a simple set screw. As you tighten the lock screw, the ring compresses evenly around the eyepiece barrel. This provides a more secure, centered grip and prevents the scratches and gouges that set screws can inflict on the barrel's surface, preserving the condition and value of your eyepieces.

Standard 2-Inch Barrel for Universal Fit

The adapter features a standard 2-inch barrel, ensuring it fits perfectly into any 2-inch focuser, diagonal, or Powermate. The barrel is machined with a safety undercut, a groove that helps prevent the adapter from accidentally slipping out of the focuser if the locking screw becomes loose. This small detail provides peace of mind when you have your favorite eyepiece installed.

A Hi-Hat Style Balance Adapter

The Equalizer is a Hi-Hat style 2"-1.25" adapter to use in place of the standard adapter when balance matters. For bringing 1.25" eyepieces closer to parfocal with other Tele Vue eyepieces, use the Hi-Hat 1.25" to 2" adapter (ASF-8125) instead.

Workflow and Limitations of the Equalizer

Imagine observing the entire Veil Nebula with a 2-inch wide-field eyepiece, then wanting to zero in on a filamentary detail with a high-power 1.25-inch planetary eyepiece. With the Equalizer, you simply swap the eyepiece assembly. Your Dobsonian stays put, requiring no brake adjustment or manual nudging to fight tube drift. This fluid workflow keeps your attention on the object, not on the mechanics of your telescope.

The primary trade-off is the added weight. While 12 ounces is the point, it does contribute to the total payload on your focuser and mount. For very small telescopes or mounts already operating at their weight limit, this additional mass is a factor to consider. However, for most setups designed to handle 2-inch accessories, the benefit of stable balance far outweighs the modest increase in total load.

A Dobsonian User's Best Friend

For observers using Dobsonians or other alt-azimuth mounts without tracking, balance is everything. The Equalizer is an essential tool for maintaining that balance. By allowing you to switch from a low-power "finder" eyepiece in a 2-inch format to a high-power 1.25-inch eyepiece for detailed views without upsetting the scope's equilibrium, it transforms a potentially clumsy process into a quick, one-handed operation.
