Launch Visual AssistantThe TeleVue Ethos 6mm 100° Eyepiece brings a 100° apparent field to high power in a dual 1¼"/2" barrel. Its 6mm focal length suits planetary and double-star detail, and its 15mm of eye relief is the same as every Ethos in Tele Vue's chart. The design features a 10.4mm field stop, and the entire eyepiece weighs 15.5 oz, making it a substantial high-power instrument.
At high power, a wide apparent field gives a wide true field for the magnification and extends the time an object drifts across the view before the telescope needs to be nudged. The 6mm Ethos offers a 100° apparent field for high-magnification views of planets, double stars and small planetary nebulae.
The true field of view is determined by the eyepiece's 10.4mm field stop diameter and your telescope's focal length. In the Tele Vue NP101is (540mm focal length), Tele Vue's table gives 90x and a true field of 1.10° (10.4 / 540 x 57.3), wide enough to frame the entire Dumbbell Nebula (M27) with sky around it.
The Ethos 6mm features a dual-purpose barrel that fits both 1.25" and 2" focusers and diagonals, offering convenience rather than an optical advantage in 2" mode. The 1.25" barrel is threaded for standard 1.25" filters, allowing you to enhance contrast on planetary or nebular targets directly at the eyepiece.
In 1¼" holders, a lock screw on the eyepiece's 2" section can be tightened against the outside of the holder; the eyepiece is heavy and can fall out of slip-fit holders unless the lock screw is used. In 2" holders, remove the eyepiece lock screw and keep the holder's screw out of the barrel slot. To use 48mm (2") filters, the Tele Vue EBX-2120 barrel extender can be added, which also helps in parfocalizing eyepiece sets.
The Ethos 6mm has 15mm of eye relief, the same as every Ethos and Ethos-SX in Tele Vue's chart, so the viewing position stays familiar as you change focal length. The chart also marks it Dioptrx ready.
With small exit pupils such as 1mm or less, you probably will not need eyeglasses. The 6mm Ethos gives a 0.6mm exit pupil at f/10 and 1.3mm at f/4.5 (per the chart). If you do wear glasses for astigmatism, choose eyepieces with 15mm to 20mm of eye relief, or a Dioptrx in place of the glasses.
The 6mm and 8mm Ethos eyepieces are designed to be parfocal, meaning you can switch between them with little to no refocusing required.
When used in a 2" focuser, the 6mm Ethos will typically reach focus about 0.75 inches further out than a 26mm Nagler Type 5 eyepiece. In a 1.25" focuser with Tele Vue's "high-hat" adapter, it becomes parfocal with the entire line of Tele Vue Plössls, Type 6 Naglers, and 1.25" Panoptics, and Nagler Zooms.
Fast Newtonian and Dobsonian reflectors show coma, which makes off-centre stars look like little comets, and a 100° field shows it clearly. Use the Paracorr Type-2 coma corrector for any reflector with a focal ratio of f/5.5 or faster.
The Paracorr Type-2 inserts into your 2" focuser and eliminates the mirror coma, for the same kind of full-field sharpness Tele Vue's NP-Series refractors show. It also acts as a 1.15x magnification amplifier, effectively turning an f/4.5 scope into an f/5.2 system.
Tele Vue makes a 6mm in both the Ethos and Delos lines. The choice between the Ethos and Delos lines comes down to a trade-off between the apparent field of view and eye relief.
On steady nights, or with short focal length telescopes, you can increase the magnification of the 6mm Ethos while retaining its 100° field by using a Tele Vue Barlow or Powermate. They are the recommended route to higher magnifications with a 100° field.
When pairing the Ethos with a 2" Powermate, you should use the eyepiece's native 2" barrel for a secure fit. A 2x Powermate transforms the 6mm into a 3mm eyepiece, for splitting tight double stars or examining lunar craterlets. Note that a 1.25" filter should not be threaded into the Ethos when used with a 2x Powermate, as it may contact the Powermate's top lens element.
You can calculate the true field of view (TFoV) using the formula: TFoV = (Eyepiece Field Stop ÷ Telescope Focal Length) x 57.3. For the Ethos 6mm, the field stop is 10.4mm. In a telescope with a 1200mm focal length, the true field would be (10.4 ÷ 1200) x 57.3 = 0.50 degrees, roughly the apparent size of the full Moon.
An 8" f/10 SCT has a focal length of around 2000mm. The 6mm Ethos would provide 333x magnification. That is a very high power; the atmosphere usually limits planetary observing to about 300x, so use it on steady nights. The 100° field means you can watch the planet and its moons drift across the sky for a long time before needing to adjust the telescope.
With 15mm of eye relief, some eyeglass wearers may not be able to see the entire 100° field at once, experiencing some vignetting at the edge. For observers who must wear glasses for astigmatism, the Tele Vue Delos 6mm, with its 20mm of eye relief, is often a more comfortable choice. However, for exit pupils of 1mm or less, many observers find they don't need their glasses at all.
The 2" barrel is included just for convenience. It allows the eyepiece to be used in smaller 1.25" focusers common on portable refractors, as well as in the larger 2" diagonals and focusers found on most reflectors and SCTs. There is no optical benefit to using it in a 2" holder; it is a mechanical convenience.
Yes, the 6mm Ethos is parfocal with the 8mm Ethos. This means you can swap between these two eyepieces and require minimal to no refocusing,
If you are using a fast Newtonian or Dobsonian reflector (f/5.5 or faster), a Tele Vue Paracorr Type-2 is recommended by Tele Vue. The wide 100° field of the Ethos will reveal the coma inherent in fast mirrors. A Paracorr corrects this aberration, so stars stay sharp toward the edge.
The Ethos 6mm offers a 100° apparent field, a 10.4mm field stop and 15mm of eye relief. The Delos 6mm has a 72° field and a 7.6mm field stop but provides a longer 20mm of eye relief, making it the better choice for observers who need to wear eyeglasses.
Not directly. The eyepiece itself is only threaded for 1.25" filters. To use 2" (48mm) filters, you must attach the Tele Vue EBX-2120 2" Eyepiece Barrel Extender to the 2" portion of the eyepiece barrel. This provides a threaded mounting point for 2" filters.
A wide field at high power has two main benefits. First, it gives more true field for the same magnification. Second, for non-driven telescopes like Dobsonians, it increases the amount of time an object takes to drift across the field, meaning you spend more time observing and less time nudging the scope.
Yes, the Ethos 6mm can be used with Tele Vue Barlows and Powermates to achieve even higher magnifications while retaining the 100° apparent field. For example, a 2x Powermate effectively turns it into a 3mm eyepiece. Use the 2" barrel of the Ethos in a 2" Powermate, and keep 1¼" filters out of the Ethos with the 2x Powermate.
