Baader's proprietary Phantom Group Coating is a 7-layer broadband anti-reflection system applied to every glass-to-air surface. This coating is specifically engineered to be most effective where the dark-adapted human eye is most sensitive—in the green part of the spectrum around 520nm. The Hyperion 8mm is designed for both visual and photographic use. Removing the rubber eyecup reveals two distinct sets of threads for attaching cameras. The M43 thread allows for classic eyepiece projection imaging with a T-2 adapter, while the larger SP54 thread is designed for afocal projection with cameras whose lenses cannot be removed. This eyepiece adapts to virtually any telescope focuser. It ships as a standard 1.25" eyepiece, but by simply unscrewing the lower chrome barrel, a 2" barrel is revealed. Baader offers both this 8mm fixed focal length eyepiece and a popular 8-24mm Clickstop Zoom. While the zoom offers unmatched convenience for finding and framing targets at various magnifications, a fixed ("prime") eyepiece like the 8mm Hyperion has a simpler optical design with fewer lens elements. This typically results in slightly higher light throughput and edge-of-field sharpness, making it the preferred choice for observers who prioritize the absolute best image fidelity at this specific magnification.
The Hyperion 8mm offers three main advantages over a typical Plössl: a much wider 68° apparent field of view for a more immersive experience, advanced Phantom Group multi-coatings for higher contrast and light transmission, and a modular design with built-in camera threads and the ability to change focal length with optional rings.
In a typical 8" f/10 SCT (2032mm focal length), the 8mm Hyperion yields 254x magnification, which is an excellent power for viewing Jupiter. This magnification is high enough to clearly resolve the primary cloud bands, the Great Red Spot, and shadow transits of the Galilean moons. The wide 68° field will keep the planet in view for a longer duration before you need to adjust the telescope.
For eyepiece projection with a DSLR, you will need two accessories. First, remove the eyecup to expose the M43 thread. Then, attach a Baader Hyperion M43/T-2 adapter ring. This provides a standard T-thread to which you can connect a T-ring specific to your camera brand (e.g., Canon, Nikon, Sony).
