How does the Baader Hyperion Zoom Mark IV achieve its full 3.6-24mm range?
The set includes two main optical components. The Hyperion Mark IV eyepiece itself provides the base 8-24mm zoom range. The included 2.25x Barlow lens attaches to the eyepiece's 1.25" nosepiece, multiplying the focal length and shifting the effective range to 3.6-10.7mm. Together, they cover the entire spectrum from 3.6mm to 24mm without gaps.
What is the apparent field of view for the Hyperion Zoom IV at each clickstop?
The apparent field of view (AFOV) changes as you zoom, becoming wider at higher magnifications. Baader's technical data gives:
-
24mm: 48° AFOV
-
20mm: 53° AFOV
-
16mm: 58° AFOV
-
12mm: 63° AFOV
-
8mm: 68° AFOV
What magnifications does the set give?
Magnification is the telescope's focal length divided by the eyepiece focal length. On a telescope of 1000mm focal length the zoom alone gives about 42x to 125x, and with the Barlow about 93x (10.7mm) to 278x (3.6mm).
Can I use the included Hyperion 2.25x Barlow with other 1.25" eyepieces?
The lens unit, without Barlow adapter A, can be attached directly onto many 1.25" eyepieces that do not already have an integrated Barlow element, giving a 2x Barlow.
Can the set be used on a spotting scope?
Only the zoom eyepiece. Baader cautions that the Barlow lens is only suitable for astronomical telescopes; on spotting scopes the zoom must be used without it, and with the supplied A ring the Mark IV focuses with all spotting scopes Baader tested.
How do I connect my DSLR camera to the Baader Hyperion Zoom Mark IV?
There are two ways: the M43 thread on top of the eyepiece takes the Hyperion M43/T-2 adapter (#2958080), to which a T-2 camera ring attaches; or the included Barlow, with its T-2 thread adapter, can be mounted in front of a DSLR with a T-ring.
Is the Hyperion Zoom Mark IV eyepiece suitable for binoviewing?
The Hyperion Zoom was designed from the ground up for binoviewers. With a 55 mm diameter a pair can be used from 55mm interpupillary distance, and the ClickStops let two eyepieces be set to the same magnification, even in the dark.
Can I use filters with the Hyperion Zoom Mark IV?
Yes. Both nosepieces are threaded to accept either 1.25" or 2" eyepiece filters; one nosepiece is used at a time. The Barlow also has a 1.25" filter thread.
Why is the set only for astronomical telescopes?
This set is only meant for astronomical use: with the Barlow it will not come to focus on spotting scopes. The zoom eyepiece without the Barlow can be used on spotting scopes with the supplied A ring.
What are the "A" and "B" adapters included with the Hyperion Zoom IV for?
Both have 1 3/8" inner threads and differ in height. Adapter A lets the zoom reach almost 4mm deeper into a spotting scope's eyepiece clamp to reach infinity focus. Adapter B is for telescopes: it keeps the bottom of the eyepiece flush with the upper end of most star diagonals. Baader's site lists them in the zoom's standard outfit; our box list names only the eyepiece and the Barlow.
