The 76° Flat Field: 8 Lenses and an 18.85mm Field Stop

The Morpheus optical design produces a sharp, flat image across the entire 76° field, defined by an 18.85mm field stop. Comprised of 8 lens elements in 5 groups, including ED and Lanthanum glass, the design gives a sharp image right to the edge of the field.

The angular magnification distortion is exceedingly low, so planets and lunar features keep their shapes as they cross the field and the stated 76° is the true value; deep-sky objects also appear embedded in their stellar surroundings.

Phantom Coating® Group for Maximum Contrast

The Phantom Group multi-coatings, pioneered in the Hyperion line, were further optimised for the Morpheus and index-matched to each of the different glasses, and the internal mechanics have been ray-traced and baffled against stray light and reflections.

18.5mm Eye Relief and the "Spacewalk" Effect

The subjective "spacewalk" feeling is not just a function of a wide field; it requires comfortable and forgiving eye placement. Eye relief, the related large eye lens and ease of viewing are the factors. The Morpheus 14mm has 18.5mm of eye relief, and eyeglass wearers can take in the full field with the series.

Even at too large a viewing distance the object remains visible, which public observatories with many untrained visitors appreciate. The foldable rubber eyecup has an integral M43-threaded metal ring that keeps it securely attached when folded up or down.

Dual 1.25"/2" Barrels with Safety Kerfs

The Morpheus 14mm has a 24mm long 1.25" barrel and a 21mm long 2" barrel integrated into one eyepiece. The back focus gain is 21mm when the 2" barrel is used, compared with the 1.25" barrel. Baader's Slip-Protect Safety-Kerfs on the 1.25" and 2" barrels are numerous shallow kerfs that give additional grip and security against inadvertent drops from smooth-sided barrels, without the problems sometimes caused by traditional wide undercuts.

The eyepiece fits 1.25" and 2" focusers and diagonals. It is threaded for filters, with M28.5 as the lens-side inner connection.

A 55mm Body Optimized for Binoviewing

Baader designed the Morpheus series for binoviewing: a 55mm outer housing diameter throughout the series allows binoviewing from 55mm interpupillary distance, even for children, and the body has been made as small as possible for nose clearance.

The weight is essentially the lenses plus the protection and water resistance it can supply. The net weight is 0.46 kg; the technical data gives 360g for the eyepiece and 85mm for the body above the reference plane.

The M43 Thread System for Eyepiece Projection

Beneath the eyecup, a hidden M43 camera thread allows for the direct and rigid attachment of a camera for eyepiece projection. The distortion of the Morpheus is even lower than in the Hyperion eyepieces.

The flat field design suits photographic projection. With optional adapters, you can connect a wide range of imaging devices:

• M43 to T-2 Adapter (#2958080): Connects to the vast Astro T-2 System for attaching DSLRs, system cameras, or 1.25" eyepiece clamps for planetary imagers.
• M43 to SP54 Adapter (#2954251): Opens up the world of Hyperion DT-rings for afocal projection with a camera's front lens thread. A C-Mount adapter (#2958520) is also available to screw matching cameras onto the eyepiece.

Luminescent Labels and Modular Eyecups

Designed for practical use in the field, the Morpheus 14mm features photo-luminescent engravings. Baader's luminescent lettering glows in a soft green after the eyepiece has been in the light or briefly lit with a flashlight; the main letters shine for up to three minutes, so the focal length can be recognised in the dark.

The eyepiece includes two different eyecups to suit your observing style. The folding rubber/metal eyecup stays soft while securely attached, and the winged foldable eyecup is, in Baader's words, for comfort and exclusion of stray light when binoviewing with eyeglasses.

A Complete Kit with Holster and 7.5mm Extension

The box holds the eyepiece, the foldable rubber/metal eyecup, the winged eyecup, the Cordura holster (usable as a belt pouch or on a tripod), the focal length indicator clip (bend up its fingers to identify eyepieces by touch), the M43/M43 extension and three dust caps.

Also included is an M43/M43 extension, which adds 7.5mm of height. Baader uses it to optimise the position of the eyecup for your personal viewing position, to adapt cameras with an M43 thread, and as a clamping surface for smartphone holders.
