  • Celestron Advanced VX 9.25" EdgeHD Telescope

The Celestron Advanced VX 9.25" EdgeHD Telescope combines a formidable 235mm (9.25") aplanatic optical system with the Advanced VX computerized equatorial mount. This package delivers astrograph-quality images with its native 2350mm focal length at f/10, mounted on a GoTo platform with a 30 lb instrument load capacity. The EdgeHD optics produce a 42mm image circle to cover large sensors, with 0.49 arc second Dawes resolution and 1127x the light gathering power of the human eye. The kit sets a standard in mid-level telescopes.

    EdgeHD Optics: A 235mm Flat-Field System with a 42mm Image Circle

The EdgeHD optical design produces a focal plane more than three times flatter than a standard Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. It reduces more than off-axis star coma: it gives an astrograph-quality flat focal plane all the way to the edge of the 42mm field. Every EdgeHD is tested with a camera and an artificial star before it ships.

The kit gives unparalleled views of the planets, up-close views of the lunar surface including craters and maria, and stunning deep sky images. StarBright XLT coatings cover every optical surface.

Imaging at f/10, with a Barlow, and at f/2

Each EdgeHD tube has a removable secondary mirror and is aligned on a laser bench so it is axially symmetric in any configuration.

    • Native f/10: The 2350mm focal length is ideal for high-resolution planetary, lunar, and solar imaging, and provides the scale necessary to capture the smallest of deep-sky objects.
    • Barlow: An optional Barlow lens adds magnification for high-resolution planetary, lunar and solar imaging.
    • Ultra-Fast f/2: The optical tube is Fastar-compatible. All EdgeHD tubes are Fastar compatible for ultra-fast f/2 wide-field imaging with a third-party lens accessory in place of the secondary mirror.

Imaging-Focused Design: Mirror Clutches, Vents, and 146.05mm Back Focus

The EdgeHD optical tube is engineered with features specifically for astrophotography. Flexible tension clutches hold the primary mirror in place after focusing, reducing image shift during long exposures. Once engaged, the clutches keep the image centered on the sensor without putting force on the mirror assembly.

Cooling vents on the rear cell allow hot air to be released from behind the primary mirror, and each vent has an integrated 50-mesh filter that keeps dust out. The optical design specifies a precise back focus of 146.05mm (5.75") from the rear cell's 3.290"x16 tpi thread, ensuring optimal edge performance with your camera and accessories.

Advanced VX Mount: A 30 lb Capacity GoTo Platform

The Advanced VX is the smallest of Celestron's German equatorial mounts. Its 30 lb payload capacity, not counting counterweights, offers in Celestron's words a sturdy platform for the 9.25" EdgeHD even with optional accessories like StarSense AutoAlign, a Focus Motor, a finderscope and a camera. It has permanently programmable periodic error correction (PPEC) and All-Star Polar Alignment, which works without a view of Polaris.

The mount head weighs 17 lbs. The DC servo motors provide responsive slewing at up to 4° per second and precise tracking at sidereal, solar, and lunar rates. Two 12 lb counterweights are included, and the mount has ports for the hand control, an autoguider and two AUX accessories.

Stability and Compatibility: 2" Steel Legs and a Dual CG-5/CGE Saddle

The AVX mount is supported by a robust tripod with 2" diameter stainless steel legs, providing an extra-wide stance for improved stability. An accessory tray is included.

The dual saddle plate accepts CG-5 and CGE-style dovetails; you switch by moving the hand knobs to a separate set of holes. It takes Vixen format dovetails 100mm or longer.

NexStar+ and PWI: 40,000+ Objects and Advanced Mount Modeling

At the heart of the AVX is the NexStar+ hand controller, which gives you access to a database of over 40,000 celestial objects. The kit also includes Celestron PWI (CPWI), co-developed with PlaneWave Instruments, with a graphical planetarium interface, PointXP mount modeling with 100+ alignment points, alignment save and reload, scope parking and a complete ASCOM interface for third-party software.

Your purchase also includes Celestron's Starry Night Special Edition Software, which helps you plan sessions and includes telescope control from a PC. The NexStar+ hand control has a USB port.

    Solar Warning

Never look directly at the Sun with the naked eye or with an optic (unless you have the proper solar filter). Permanent and irreversible eye damage may result. Never use your optic to project an image of the Sun onto any surface. Internal heat build-up can damage the optic and any accessories attached to it. Never leave your optic unsupervised. Make sure an adult who is familiar with the correct operating procedures is with your optic at all times, especially when children are present.

  • Is the 30 lb capacity of the Advanced VX mount enough for the 9.25" EdgeHD for astrophotography?

The 30 lb capacity offers a sturdy platform for the 21 lb 9.25" EdgeHD tube even with optional accessories like StarSense AutoAlign, a Focus Motor, a finderscope and a camera. The capacity does not include the counterweights; two 12 lb counterweights are included.

What size camera sensor can the Celestron 9.25" EdgeHD fully illuminate?

EdgeHD is designed for a flat 42mm image circle, and Celestron's final acceptance test checks every tube for sharp images at the center and each corner of a full-frame (24x36mm, 42mm diagonal) camera.

How do I convert the 9.25" EdgeHD to an f/2 imaging system?

The tube is Fastar compatible: its secondary mirror is removable and can be replaced with a third-party lens accessory, sold separately, for ultra-fast f/2 wide-field imaging.

Do I need to see Polaris to polar align the Advanced VX mount?

No. The mount includes Celestron’s All-Star Polar Alignment procedure. You align on stars, slew to a bright star, and the mount moves to where it would be if accurately polar aligned; you then center it with the mount's latitude and azimuth adjustments, not the hand control.

What is the advantage of the EdgeHD optical design over a standard Schmidt-Cassegrain?

EdgeHD is aplanatic and flat field: its focal plane is more than three times flatter than a standard Schmidt-Cassegrain, so stars stay sharp to the edge of a flat camera sensor across a 42mm field.

What software is included with the Celestron Advanced VX 9.25" EdgeHD?

This telescope package includes a comprehensive software suite. You get the NexStar+ hand control with its built-in database, a free download of Celestron's Starry Night Special Edition Software for planetarium viewing and session planning, and Celestron PWI (CPWI) Telescope Control Software with PointXP mount modeling and an ASCOM interface.

What power source do I need for the Advanced VX mount?

The mount needs 12V DC, 3.5A (tip positive). The included DC power cable works with a car battery adapter, a cigarette lighter outlet or a portable power supply.

How portable is the Advanced VX 9.25" EdgeHD system?

The system is designed for portability. The main components break down into manageable weights: the optical tube is 21 lbs, the mount head is 17 lbs, and the tripod is 18 lbs. The Advanced VX is a portable mount.
