  • Celestron Omni 9mm Eyepiece - 1.25"

The Celestron Omni 9mm Eyepiece delivers high-power views through its 4-element Plössl optics and a 50° apparent field of view. Its 1.25" barrel is threaded for filters, and the entire assembly weighs just 1.67oz (47.5g). With 6mm of eye relief, this eyepiece is engineered for detailed observations of the Moon and planets.

The 4-Element, 50° Plössl Optical System

This eyepiece uses a classic 4-element, 2-group Plössl design, a proven workhorse for planetary and deep-sky observing. The multi-coated optics provide clear, sharp images across the 50° apparent field of view. To maximize image contrast when viewing bright objects like Jupiter or the Moon, the edges of the lenses are blackened to reduce internal reflections and glare.

A 9mm Focal Length for Planetary and Lunar Detail

With its 9mm focal length, the Omni eyepiece is built for high magnification. It allows you to resolve fine details like the Cassini Division in Saturn's rings, cloud bands on Jupiter, or small craterlets on the lunar surface. The 8.5mm field stop ensures a sharp, defined edge to the field of view, making it an excellent choice for splitting close double stars.

Aluminum Body and 6mm Eye Relief

The Omni eyepiece is constructed from a lightweight aluminum body that has been two-step anodized for a durable, reflection-resistant matte finish. While the 6mm of eye relief is tight and a necessary trade-off in this classic short-focal-length design, a soft, fold-down rubber eye guard is included to help position your eye correctly and block stray light. The 1.25" barrel is threaded to accept standard planetary and nebula filters.

  • What is the Celestron Omni 9mm eyepiece best for?

The Omni 9mm is ideal for high-magnification views of bright objects. Its 9mm focal length makes it perfect for observing planetary details like Jupiter's Great Red Spot, the phases of Venus, and resolving crater detail on the Moon. It's also effective for splitting tight double stars.

How does the Omni 9mm perform on Jupiter in an 8" f/10 SCT?

In a typical 8" f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope with a 2032mm focal length, the Omni 9mm will yield a magnification of approximately 226x. This is an excellent power for clearly resolving Jupiter's main cloud bands, the Great Red Spot, and the four Galilean moons as distinct discs during nights of steady seeing.

Is the 6mm eye relief on the Omni 9mm eyepiece suitable for eyeglass wearers?

The 6mm eye relief is very short and generally not recommended for those who need to wear glasses while observing to correct for astigmatism. To see the full 50° field of view, you will need to position your eye very close to the lens, which is difficult with glasses on.

Can I use filters with the Celestron Omni 9mm eyepiece?

Yes. The 1.25" barrel of the Omni 9mm eyepiece is threaded to accept all standard 1.25" astronomy filters. This allows you to use color filters to enhance planetary contrast or a moon filter to reduce glare.

What is the difference between the Omni 9mm and a more expensive eyepiece?

The Omni 9mm is a classic Plössl design, which offers excellent sharpness and contrast for the price but has a modest 50° field of view and short eye relief. More expensive eyepieces often feature more complex optical designs that provide a much wider apparent field (68° to 100°) and longer eye relief, but at a higher cost and weight.

How should I care for my Omni 9mm eyepiece?

Always keep the dust caps on when the eyepiece is not in use to protect the lenses. To clean the optics, first blow away any loose dust with a bulb blower. Then, use a soft camel hair brush to gently remove any remaining particles. If necessary, use a lens cleaning solution and a microfiber cloth specifically designed for optical surfaces.
